Looks like the agricultural sector in California is facing a crippling labor situation.
It appears that thousands of agricultural workers (between 1/2 to 1 million total in California and over 80% undocumented) are not showing up for the citrus harvest out of fear after several ICE raids in the Central Valley.😁

@Khenpal1 sounds like an irresponsible hiring practice on California's end reap what you sow
Khenpal1 · M
@SW-User LOL, no juice for you or wine 😁
SW-User
@Khenpal1 California wine is criminally overrated anyway but tell me exactly how that response is a rebuttal to my reply
SW-User
@SW-User You think California will be alone in this?
SW-User
@SW-User any state that become so dependent on illegal immigrants for their work force deserves it. They made a choice to cheap out on illegal labor and now facing consequences for their actions
Khenpal1 · M
@SW-User I think it was like this in California for last 30 years , not many are willing to work under such conditions. Tariffs on Europe , wine will cost you much more . Oranges etc.. you will be forced to buy from Mexico with 25% tariffs and you are going to pay for it 😂

@Khenpal1 you're like a doomsday preacher in the street i promise you I'll be okay blue states might suffer. You're conveniently forget florida and Georgia who aren't completely dependent on illegal labor

@SW-User Once upon a time, Florida was crowned King Orange. Citrus groves covered the state from Ocala southward. Not long after came freezes and diseases, Mickey Mouse and more houses, and the big duo — interstates and the internet.

King Orange was dethroned.Grove owners battling multiple years of freezes and citrus canker and then greening sold to developers. The groves’ new corporate owners moved their trees to the Caribbean.“With citrus, there’s never enough to go around. So much goes to shipping (commercially).”

SW-User

@SW-User Nearly half of the nation's approximately 2 million farm workers lack legal status, according to the departments of Labor and Agriculture, as well as many dairy and meatpacking workers.Farmers have a legal option for hiring labor with the H-2A visa program, which allows employers to bring in an unlimited number of seasonal workers if they can show there are not enough U.S. workers willing, qualified and available to do the job.The program has grown over time, with 378,000 H-2A positions certified by the Labor Department in 2023, three times more than in 2014, according to agency data.
But that figure is only about 20% of the nation's farm workers, according to the USDA.
Many farmers say they cannot afford the visa's wage and housing requirements. Others have year-round labor needs that rule out the seasonal visas. This program often fails to work and is denied to businesses because of Republican opposition. For decades, farm and worker groups have attempted to pass immigration reform that would enable more agricultural workers to stay in the U.S., but the legislation has failed, so far due mostly to Republican politics.

@Khenpal1 guess they'll have to do like the cotton farmers did in 1865 and mechanize/automate since they can't rely on cheap disposable labor anymore... 🤔
SW-User
@wildbill83 that is such a beautiful comparison. I guess historically democrats love cheap slave labor
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@SW-User umm, historically that applied to all Americans
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@SW-User Make sure you ask for the front half of the cow, it has the best cuts on it.
Khenpal1 · M
@SunshineGirl Its all perfect as long as you pay . In Russia food cost are 100 % up in one year. So its in UK .

@Khenpal1 👍

Indeed there is a twofold to this story: 1) for decades illegals and migrants have been coming to this country and working on the jobs that gives little pay and physical hard to see my hard labor that certain Americans refuse to do. the Americans who want that cheap labor. 2) illegal and immigrants who are taking jobs that give higher pay, under bidding a certain class of people, and hiring their own when put in places of position. Thus taking the jobs from a certain class of people and they want the illegals and migrants gone.

Which it's better which is worse? Which leads to higher prices or do both do, after increase in wages mean increase in prices as well as lack of and loss of production?

@Charity It took decades for this to occur and cant be solved in 4 years time. If trade wars starts be ready to pay 25% for most products.
