Why bother with political discussions? Everyone just gets upset or turns nasty

We need to have political discussions because politics is what drives everything in the world. People need to be engaged in how the world runs. The problem comes when, as you say, everyone just gets upset and turns nasty. That's because people far too many people hold their political beliefs as dogma rather than as rational concepts that can be discussed rationally. When people's beliefs are criticized, people react to that as if they, themselves, are being attacked. And, to a great extent, what passes for political discussion today is mostly just bad mouthing those with whom one disagrees rather than a rational, logical, fact-based examination of the issues.

If everyone turns away from political discussions, how can anything ever change and how can we find some way to build consensus about how the world should be run? A democracy can't exist without people willing and able to engage constructively.

Because reasoned debate is so important . . and I have faint hopes that one day I may find someone who knows how to debate respecfully.

@Arboven I think people behave worse when they do not have a human face in front of them, but we can't all meet face to face all the time.

@Reason10 I think remote debating, like remote working, has tremendous potential for breaking down barriers and increasing understanding. The main drawback at the moment are people that see it as a totem of absolute free speech and deny any responsibility for the consequences that flow from what they write. Just because you cannot see or care less those consequences does not mean they are any less real.

There is a famous case in English law in the 1930s - Donohue v Stevenson - which established that the manufacturer of a drink was liable in law for injury caused to a woman even though there was no contract between the two parties - the drink was purchased from a restaurant. That gave rise to the legal question "Who is my neighbour?" (Answer: potentially anyone). Apply that principle to social media and it might just stand a chance of becoming a cornerstone of civilisation.
1) It educates the fence-sitters who are reading the discussion.

2) Conservatives get angry easily and that's funny.

Here is a downvote from me for spreading misinformation.

@Aysel

I may stand corrected by you. While we're not sure of the political views of the NY shooter, he certainly was not MAGA.

Politicians are what happens when you dont have lawyers neutered..😷
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@whowasthatmaskedman That's pretty original. Don't know if I should agree or disagree, since a baby isn't automatically going to become a lawyer. But I gotta admit, that's original.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Reason10 I think most on both sides can agree that Lawyers should be neutered..😷
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@whowasthatmaskedman I think people should recognize, a LOT of lawyers contribute to the national quilt by making things cost a lot more.

That's probably why I (and I guess a bunch of others) come here. We are pretty much EQUAL in this environment. The ONLY thing that distinguishes us is our views and our statements. That's the ONLY thing we are judged on. Everything else, we are ALL just text.

I don't discuss politics outside of places like this. Too many idiots out there and frankly, I don't want to spend what few moments I have making politicians more popular and important than they already are.

At this place, a person can speak his mind and not worry about getting punched. Yes, the discussions here get nasty. But it all is confined to text. I prefer that.
