Politics - Struggling to stay on topic

Why do people struggle to stay on topic? I often see discussions about Harris where people immediately bring up Trump, even though the original question doesn’t mention him at all.

The same thing happens to the other side—someone says something about Trump, and suddenly Harris gets dragged into the conversation, even when she has nothing to do with the actual question.

It feels like more and more people are dodging the actual point, behaving like politicians instead of addressing the question or statement at hand. Many of y'all would benefit from going back to the basics, relearning how to respond directly and thoughtfully to the subject at hand. a lot of people are so freaking obsessed with this crap your loosing your ways of being open minded and critically thinking about things. Try staying on point. ✌
Because some questions are baiting the other side.

And the choice really comes down to them.

I had a passion for online discussions for a long time (can't stand it now) and I found a pattern where a thread might start out short and sweet, but over time, every response gets longer and longer until each party is reading a damn book every time it's someone else's turn.

My solution to that was to sum up my main point in the least amount of words possible (perferably one sentence) and ignore that internal impulse that demands, "But I gotta cover this and this and this and this too". Just choose one point, hope it covers multiple facets, and say it.

@SinlessOnslaught That's some good advice sir...I have a problem with needing to address every single point....

It's called deflection. When people can't answer a legitimate question, they pivot immediately and deflect and attack.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Sometimes it's done intentionally to dodge the question, other times it's simply because people need to make comparisons.

* Edit: intentionally, not internationally lol

There are many ways to resolve a conflict, and not all of them are good ones. At some point, someone learned that one way to end an argument was to avoid, deflect, dismiss, or attack.

It's unfortunate, but without consequences, people tend to continue engaging in bad habits. If someone consistently wants to argue in bad faith, the only option is to block or ignore them. They're not seeking to cooperate or learn

@TinyViolins Normally you resolve a conflict by presenting a compromise that both parties can agree on, not by blocking them. Of course it helps when both parties are opening to listening to each other.
The problem occurs when one party incessantly talks over the other party and refuses to acknowledge their point of view and then later on they go online to whinge and complain and throw as much shit at the other person as possible to make them look bad in order to shift the blame.
Bothsidesing-ass bothsidesing. The almost only happens on the Right. The only time people will bring up Trump when talking about Harris is in relation to the election, where we have to choose between the two.
In a presidential election, the choice isn't among an infinity of candidates; it's between candidate A and candidate B (or a "protest" vote).

And so, one cannot consider the attributes of candidate B in isolation; it's always part of a comparison between candidates. And sure, both candidates are flawed. But we still have to compare them to pick the lesser of two evils.

There may be a few questions about attributes of candidate A that don't insinuate an agenda driven comparison with candidate B, but such questions are few and far between.

it is called projection in many instances but the old saying goes, Who is without sin, let them cast the first stone" and that is what is happening. The truth is the real truth has not been told. on anything
Bobby2905 · 26-30, M
@akindheart exactly

It's tiresome.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout A perfect illustration of the inability to remain on topic . . 🤦‍♀
Its a constant struggle, imo, to keep posts reasonably related to the OP on here and still let folks put in their two cents.
One dot at a time - no pictures. Americans hate context and obviously you deserve only one dot.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
Short attention spans and not reading the original post carefully enough may also be factors.
The race replaces politics in fascist countries. Americans are doing it right. Far, far right.
Sometimes people just say what comes to mind.

@Bobby2905 Still waiting for you to ask a question about Kamala….
Bobby2905 · 26-30, M
@justanothername With all due respect, I never asked a question about Trump, nor do I plan to ask one about Harris. I don’t give a shit about either of them or the Republican/ Democratic parties. It seems like you missed the point of the question entirely.

I suggest re-reading my original post and maybe checking out some of the replies to get a better sense of what was actually being asked. You could even try putting my question into ChatGPT to get a clearer understanding, if your still interested. Thanks for your time, and have a great day. Peace ✌

@Bobby2905 In your OP you asked why people struggle to stay on topic when talking about either candidate, CORRECT? Y/N

My answer was in response to that part of your question. So, Yes, I believe I did answer your question.

@SumKindaMunster I don't care enough to address every post and every item. I also take into accout who is posting. Sometimes a meme is enough to address a single line item. If you wrestle the greased pigs, you get dirty and the pig enjoys it.
