California Democrats Shoot Down ‘No Tax On Tips’ Bill Proposed by GOP

Kamala Harris’ home state of California has failed to pass a bill advanced by Republicans in the state senate to end taxes on tips.

This comes after the Harris campaign came under fire last month for mimicking former President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to scrap taxes on tips for service workers, as was reported by Resist the Mainstream.

While the idea of not taxing tips was seemingly popular enough with the public for Harris to copy it, tips will not be exempted from state income taxes in California, as a proposal for such a concept was voted down by the state’s Democrats.

Harris has previously been at odds with potential political allies in California. The lack of Democrat support for her stolen ‘No tax on tips’ policy lends credence to Trump’s statement that only he would be able to enshrine it into law.

California remains one of the most unaffordable states in the US. California law also requires employers to pay tipped workers full minimum wage before tips, and employers cannot get a cut of the tips. However, because the tips are still taxed, workers are not able to keep the full amount.

Federal law does not require tipped workers to be paid full minimum wage before tips unless tips cannot reliably make up the difference. Only seven states (Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington) have the same minimum wage for tipped and non-tipped workers. Earning tips without being made to pay income tax on them is therefore all the more critical for hospitality service workers to maintain a living wage.

I love how republicans are now fighting for the low wage workers, whoes wages they have been keeping low for decades and whoes social security they cut at every opportunity.

@DonJuan Not even with yours
That should drive the ppl who earn tips right into the dems loving arms….

Don't forget her values haven't changed. So her flip flops are nothing but lies.

Democrats want to tax anyone working to give $$ to those who won't work.

@graphite A demonocrat never met a tax they did not like

Surely if taxes on tips were ended, that would just encourage employers to pay their employees next to nothing, and instead (ironically) rely on the American taxpayer to pay them instead.

@Illyria

Do away with tips?

It's the customer's money. You want to tell the customer what they can do with their money?

@beckyromero Plenty of countries don’t tip
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@Illyria

But shouldn't Americans be allowed to give a tip from their own money if that is their preference?

Or are you advocating for a Tip Police?

And if so, do you want tippers jailed or fined? And what about the receipient?

Democrats want all the taxpayer's money.
Perhaps those in the service industry would like the practice of taxing their tips be ended. If so they might as a bloc start becoming politically activity and get rid of those politicians so eager to tax them.

@BohemianBabe

I don't doubt @sunsporter1649 that there is probably legislation out there.

I'd just like to know the bill # and read it.
@beckyromero Same. There could be a good reason to reject the bill. Especially since this is kinda a scam policy. Waiters would still be underpaid even if they weren't taxed on tips. This is just a way to continue underpaying workers while pretending to be pro-worker.
So I wouldn't be surprised if bills like this did say no tax on tips, but in return companies can't be required to pay more or provide healthcare.

Bill text please.

The Democrats don't care and just another lie by Harris trying to get just one vote away from Trump.
