Gershkovich's Sentencing Exposes Corruption in Russian Legal System

Evan Gershkovich, a journalist for The Wall Street Journal, was sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison on espionage charges. There are ongoing discussions about a potential prisoner exchange to secure his release. One possibility is that Gershkovich could be exchanged for Sergey Cherkasov, a Russian accused of espionage in the United States. This process shows how corrupt the Russian legal system is and how easily it can convict innocent people just to have a suitable exchange partner for a Russian spy on the American side.
It's crazy therre are so many Pro Putin nutjobs on here, it's like they love Russia's corrupt government.
@BritishFailedAesthetic Convenient how you throw your camp under the bus the minute it is convenient. This has nothing to do with Putin.

And yeah no. Modern Russia and the USSR are not the same thing.

And slaughtering civilians is something the British Empire spent hundreds of years doing so glass houses and all that.

And no. The Russian Empire before it...sure.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow The Russian Empire and USSR.

Also it seems strange that a Patriarch of a Church would support a law forbidding evangelism.

It transcends corruption. It represents Russian society. It is frightening to see how many countries seem too be moving in this direction

@daydeeo okay, you started this thread. We can start with your first comment, watch what interview, by whom?
daydeeo · 61-69, M
@samueltyler2 Referring to your comment, that Trump would be a dictator on day one. Watch the interview to see in what context that comment was made.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@daydeeo I saw it, and listened carefully. I listen to.a lot of what he says. He is trying to be the fox in the henhouse. He says something outlandish then tries to cover it up! What does that even have to do with the subject of the thread?
The problem with this kind of thinking is everyone just assumes every westerner ever to be detained in Russia is a helpless innocent person and work backwards.

And exchanges don't really show anything about corruption either way.

It could be argued the exchange makes it more likely the Russians were right.

To be blunt at that level people become pawns in a chess game.

The US or any other nation would not hand over a spy for any random person who is arrested.

The fact they are suggests there is some truth to his being an intelligence asset.

Don't delude yourself. If you are not important you will be left to your own devices. At best it will be kicked down to the consulate to deal with.

Do you remember the Aussie government going out of their way to help Julian Assange? Me neither. He was not important enough to bother.
That is EXACTLY the kind of government we will have....arrests for no reason........etc...........if Project 2025 is put into effect.

Why do journalists go to countries that have a proven record of arresting and imprisoning journalists ?
Oh the irony… america not locking up ppl politically?
pdockal · 56-60, M
Are you sure he's innocent ????
Are you sure Russia is the only country that uses this tactic ????

Politics is a dirty business
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@pdockal So have I, but generally i trust the US media more than others, at least some! If you would like to give us a history lesson that you think proves the US media is as bad as Russia, please go ahead.

@samueltyler2

im not going to take your bait
you can trust anything ... your choice even if its inaccurate
and even if i did explain the situations that I had been involved in personally you wouldnt believe me anyway because it didnt make national news etc

the nes media is owned by (dont hold me to the number) 5 individuals who manipulate what the produce to suit their needs & make money
the news is biased & gives opionions & not the facts, just the facts
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@pdockal I wasn't giving you bait. Your response is really all I need to know to characterize you for what you are! I have appeared on local, national and international news. I know how they interview you for sometimes hours then choose the 5 second sound bite that fits what they wanted you to say. But, by and large the US free press, an oxymoron since someone has to pay the salaries, is far better than that in the Soviet Union, whose press is owned and tightly controlled by the Kremlin!

Sounds awfully familiar

Stop aiding ukraine
"Shocking! That NEVER happens!", said NO ONE!

Trump will be Our Next President.

What! no!!!!
I'm not sure how this exposes anything, since it's not exactly a new low for the Putin regime.
