They've always been the party of INDEPENDENT thinking, and usually with facts.

@Zaphod42 That's a good argument too. It could also be when Newt Gingrich started telling Republicans that if they want to win elections, they need to demonize the Democrats. It's hard to say exactly when the path to Trumpism began.

@BohoBabe Nope. Republicans may be all over the map, ideology wise (they ARE the ONLY real independents in America) but for the most part they've been honest and factual. It's just that you goose stepping NAZIS aren't used to people disagreeing with you.

@SW-User Are you saying the Republicans actually did vote on the bill they co-wrote? Are you denying that they co-wrote it?

@SW-User I'm sorry, on what planet is @BohoBabe not telling the truth? Because on this one, the president and the Republican members of Congress co-authored a border bill that everybody was able to agree on, and just as they were about to sign it, Donald Trump told them not to, because it's more important to Trump that he look good than to actually secure the border.
