What happened to politics?

Disagreement is from all times, but it used to be about things like:
- Should we subsidize housing or offer job coaching to get homeless people back on their feet?
- Should we try diplomacy or supply weapons to the resistance to stop the killing of innocent people?

Somehow that changed into: should we do anything for the homeless and save innocent people or not?

How did we go from discussing the best approach of protecting human rights to discussing ethics and morals? 🤔
And what do voters think to gain from giving up on human rights?

The right keeps pushing further to the right, and folks like me who used to be considered moderate liberal suddenly find ourselves in the position of being on the extreme left, because they moved the center.
@LordShadowfire yep, I've even seen people be called extreme left for being against mass murder of innocent people. We live in a sad world if that's extreme on any side.

@NerdyPotato Mitt Romney is now a “leftist”. And if Reagan were alive today..,

@LordShadowfire Don't accept their ridiculous language. The centre never moves and will always be there as a refuge for those who want to collaborate and progress.
@SunshineGirl the center has moved though, along with the entire spectrum. What is now center used to be the most right available a few decades ago.

@NerdyPotato I think wise politicians know where the centre lies. When the opportunity arises to shift public discourse, equilibrium is restored. That process will start in the UK on 4 July.

@SunshineGirl Well, at the very least, here in the United States, the center has been redefined. I don't say that definition is accurate, but the problem is that everybody has agreed to a new definition.

I was never fully centrist by even the older definition because even then, the right were trying to make liberals and the left sound like extremists. And now, even though my position hasn't really changed, I'm considered a left-wing extremist.

@LordShadowfire So am I, apparently, when I listen to people here. Hilarious for someone trained in liberal economic theory who has spent most of her career working for private investment funds! 🤣
