Dell makes an awesome promise to its workers: “you'll NEVER get promoted again”.

Dell wants employees to end WFH, and come back to the office. Don't ask me why – they just do. Maybe it's like pandemic public-school closures, and Dell-remote workers are always playing videogames, not completing their homework, and breaking into neighbors' houses when everyone else leaves for work?

In any case, Dell found the perfect solution. Never promote those workers again – ever. See link at bottom. Evidently you can't fire someone just for working from home. Just like you couldn't hold back an 8th grader who reads at the 3rd grade level and never logged in for 1 hour a day of remote instruction. THOSE kids all got promoted to the 9th grade. That's not gonna happen for the Dell-osians.

Of course, people who work from home don't get promoted anyway. Dell is just saying the quiet part out loud. Think about it: when was the last time you were on a Zoom call and Joe Shmoe from Two Egg, Florida (this is a real place) got singled out for congratulations and named regional VP? Yeah, it didn't happen where I work either.

The life-without-parole sentences at Dell are especially troublesome for some remote workers. If they sold their homes near the headquarters (in Texas) and bought picturesque places in Montana, Wyoming, and Two Egg Florida, it's hard to go back. Not without swallowing a ginormous new 7% mortgage.

One of the New York banks – I believe it was Chase – tried to tackle this worker migration problem a different way, a year or so ago. CEO Jamie Dimon said “Okay – we can't make you come back. But we can make you wish you had. You're now getting pay cuts commensurate with the lower living costs in Montana, Wyoming, and Florida”. He really said this. It's still being litigated in court, I believe.

Here's my theory: Dell actually doesn't give a Boca Raton whether the average worker comes back or not. Dell is first and foremost happy to stop handing out promotions and salary increases. And would be just as happy if that guy in Two Egg resigned. This is win-win for Dell.

How can we be sure remote Dell workers on the “mediocristan” part of the bell curve weren't going to get promoted anyway? Because they were too dumb to think 12 months ahead. About what would inevitably happen next, after corporate America got tired of covid 19 being a cover story for playing videogames and working as a free-lance programmer on company time.

I'm just sayin' . . .

I think employers seriously have to ask themselves why they want a return to pre-pandemic work arrangements, rather than automatically assuming that WFH is detrimental. Something similar was proposed in my workplace until it was gently pointed out that recent gains in productivity (which are conveniently taken for granted after a short time) would be lost if our employer actually made it more difficult for us to do our jobs.

The proposals above seem petty and vindictive. Would be interesting to see them tested by employment legislation.

@Harmonium1923 I like it, find the positives in what is now an inevitable development.

Managers who are always looking back to the past or trying to do what comes easiest . . perhaps someone ought to consider whether they are the right material for advancement.

@SunshineGirl i don't think anyone assumes WFH is detrimental. but there is clear evidence that if you're running a side hustle while working from home, you're not delivering what you're supposed to.

@Harmonium1923 this is the best reason to hire WFH associates. But those people aren't going to get promoted either. they never meet with - and catch the eye of - the top corporate brass.

it's like expecting a platoon leader at camp Lejune to go to the pentagon in 2 quick steps.

Wfh introduces laziness and snobby entitlement. My job can't be done from home.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@zonavar68 i'm sure some jobs - certain coding jobs - possibly can. those are the guys most likely to spend part of the day on side hustles, writing code for someone else though.

for many people, being part of the office environment is a plus. an opportunity for informal collaboration on the spur of the moment. better ability to recognize who is trustworthy and who isn't.

And who actually shows up on time, on a regular basis.

They all created this monster. You have to stay 6 feet appart. You cant come into the office and spead your germs. Oh no you have to stay home. What did they expect would happen?
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Confined i don't think companies had a choice in WFH. this was federal policy for many places - or a complete shutdown. remember what happened to restaurants? we still have closed/empty restaurants near me, 3 or 4 years later.

Say goodbye to spending 20+ years clawing your way up to middle management. Lol
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@AthrillatheHunt AI is going to eviscerate middle management. As well as coders. Those are both things an algorithm can do. AI already writes news articles, creates websites, diagnoses illnesses. America - the entire planet - is probably facing an unemployment crisis.

lots of people are going to wish they'd picked being a policeman, a fireman, or a cowboy when they were kids.

@SusanInFlorida plumbers and electricians too .

@jshm2 i'm old enough to remember when Dell was the answer to the question "who will stop the PC invasion from japan, taiwan, and china?"

Just start cutting hours
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@MarineBob that's hard to do if it's WFH.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Why does Zoom have a HQ?
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@MrBrownstone best question of the thread. probably so they can be sure their legal and accounting staffs are actually doing something useful.
