Who is your favorite Black actor, athlete, or abolitionist ? ✊

Greetings ladies and gentlemen. How are you guys doing on this beautiful day. It is still
Black History Month. Can you believe that ! 😜 I want to know who is your favorite Black actor/actress, athlete, or abolitionist. Or Civil Rights Activist.
You can name someone who is from the past or is alive today. Best answer wins! 👍

@Starcrossed His movie is out now! 🙂
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
@Zonuss I haven't seen it yet.

Favorite Black athlete: Jesse Owens for showing up the Nazis at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, ruining Hitler’s plan to make them a showcase of white supremacy.

Civil rights: Bayard Rustin doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his organizational skills.

Science: Katherine Johnson for computing the trajectory of the first Mercury capsule.

Acting: I have many happy memories of watching Redd Foxx in Sanford and Son.
@Richard65 Plus, Germany pretty much won the Olympics that year. German athletes got the most gold medals, which is why the Nazis considered the Berlin Olympics to be a success.
craig7 · 70-79, M
@Richard65 Yes,that's true - also,I once saw an interview with the late Jesse Owens,in which he said that on one occasion, Hitler waved to him from up in the stand.
@craig7 There's another story that says Hitler left early to avoid having to shake hands with Owens. However, Owens did remark on the very different treatment he received in Germany compared to the U.S.

The 1936 games gave us Olympia, a remarkable film despite its subject. Ever the egotist, Riefenstahl filmed her self making the film, and that footage shows innovations like digging a trench so the camera could follow a runner from underneath.

Toussaint Louverture, leader of the Haitian Revolution.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Burnley123 That's a good one. 🙂
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Zonuss He was an excellent military leader and politician. It's the only example of a slave revolt that succeeded in creating an independent state of their own.

Tragically, he was betrayed by the French and France forced the new country to pay massive reparations, which crippled their development.

You didn't mention musicians so I am throwing this out there... Sister Rosetta Tharpe! Love this woman and her music is astounding.

@LeopoldBloom Ive been on a kick lately accumulateling her music. Man...she's soooooo good
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I suppose Denzel is a no brainer as far as actors go .
@AthrillatheHunt difficult to put him in a bad movie, isn't it? (I'd say it was downright impossible if I hadn't seen Manchurian Candidate or the Equalizers). He even raised the quality of Spike Lee movies!
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@AthrillatheHunt He's one of the best.

Viola Desmond the face of our $10 bill, was jailed for refusing to leave a whites only area of a movie theatre. She inspired racial equality across Canada

What about a scientist?
George Washington Carver.

And a modern day scientist:
Neil deGrasse Tyson.
@Poppies I wouldn't have said someone who says "science is true even if you don't believe it" is a scientist. But a celebrity scientist, vyes
Pfuzylogic · M
That is a huge list for me and I have had friends that made a HUGE difference in my life.
The athletes:
Jesse Owens (I actually met)
Bill Russell
Roger Brown
I have known of Denzel since his first movie “Soldier’s Story” 1984.
I do remember 1968 Olympics where the two black runners held their head down and fists up on the podium. I was 9.
Marine Gunnery Sargent Leland who led me in the SeaBees.
Friends who had my back when it was their choice.
Just way too many to name how many I personally admire.
Huey Newton said that John Brown was the only white man he would have allowed in to the Black Panthers.
