Favorite Black athlete: Jesse Owens for showing up the Nazis at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, ruining Hitler’s plan to make them a showcase of white supremacy.
Civil rights: Bayard Rustin doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his organizational skills.
Science: Katherine Johnson for computing the trajectory of the first Mercury capsule.
Acting: I have many happy memories of watching Redd Foxx in Sanford and Son.

@LeopoldBloom I agree with your point, but as it's been pointed out many times, the Nazis actually treated Black athletes with more respect than the American Olympic Organisation, or America in general. Ironic though that sounds.

@Richard65 Plus, Germany pretty much won the Olympics that year. German athletes got the most gold medals, which is why the Nazis considered the Berlin Olympics to be a success.

@craig7 There's another story that says Hitler left early to avoid having to shake hands with Owens. However, Owens did remark on the very different treatment he received in Germany compared to the U.S.
The 1936 games gave us Olympia, a remarkable film despite its subject. Ever the egotist, Riefenstahl filmed her self making the film, and that footage shows innovations like digging a trench so the camera could follow a runner from underneath.
