It is a Cult, and this is what Cults do. The Cult Leader is the only person who is trustworthy and must be blindly followed in all situations.

I compare it to the “poor dog beaten daily in a trailer park but won’t leave because he or she might get fed “ syndrome. There are a number of reasons for this, one often overlooked is the sometimes subtle and sometimes very blatant brainwashing by employers, particularly large corporations with a lot to hide. They push their employees to vote for the GOP and threaten retaliation if they don’t which often include write-ups, being overlooked for promotions, etc., but not linking anything on paper to the political harassment they are using on the employee. Some can see through this but many cannot, so they vote for GOP like robots.

I don't think it’s necessarily that they trust Trump more, although many do. I think it’s mostly that Trump supporters want the best of both worlds; they want to be as entitled, as ugly, as exclusive as they want but they also want to say things like “We can agree to disagree” and “We all have to get along,” all the while supporting the erosion of rights for anyone not them.

And in that way, I guess they do place their faith in something other than family, friendship and affiliation. People would do well to remember what they’re trading away for the right to be an Ugly American.
I saw that poll and it kind of confirmed my view that there is a Trump Cult at work within the broader population of Trump supporters and sympathizers.

At the same time, its too damned big to be classically insular like more traditional cults, and its really hard to differentiate between the various kinds of "believers," i.e., those who truly think Trump himself is divine, and those who expect to profit from him, what he preaches, and the disruption to society he strives for.
The term “cult” refers most often to a group of people with usually atypical beliefs living in relative isolation from the world. They tend to centralize around one charismatic person—the cult leader—who orders the beliefs, behaviors, and customs of all the other members. Many cults stand in as de facto new religions for their followers, but some are irreligious in nature.
Authoritarian control: a worshipful attitude toward the group’s authoritarian leader.

Isolation from society: adherents work hard to isolate them from family members and friends. This helps fulfill the mind control aspirations of the leader. It also creates a hive mind

Veneration of a single individual: Charismatic leaders are often at the center of most cults
