This is a common tactic that Fascists use. When they're called out on their lies, they'll use a whataboutism in which someone else was wrong about something.
Compare this to Trump downplaying the virus. This wasn't just him being wrong, this was him lying, which we know because he was recorded admitting that he was purposely downplaying it.

Trump faces at least 6 major legal cases. He has 37 or more indictments against him and more coming, any one of which could end his freedom. You can't sell this one; it stinks far too much.
