Could the 2024 election be the greatest in a generation?

Could the 2024 presidential election be the greatest in a generation? Or worse than 2020?

Based on the situation so far, I'm predicting “worse”.

By all accounts, Biden has been talked out of stepping aside. This decision was made for him by the political mandarins who operate out of the west wing of the white house. And Biden was evidently talked into it during his recent getaway at billionaire hedge fund operator David Rubensteins's mansion.

To be fair, Biden hasn't walked back his “probably not” comments earlier this year, but his re-election team is bulking up with members of the permanent political class, who might otherwise have to get real jobs.

So . .. on the one (democrat) hand, we have an aging emperor, protected and controlled by his courtiers. And California Governor Gavin “Gruesome” Newsom announced in a press conference that he's agreed to “stand down” in 2024. In return for political favors to be named later. Former NY Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned last year, and is presumably still awaiting trial for his sex crimes. NY's senior senator Chuck Schumer would make a fine candidate – except democrat Black's won't vote for a jew. In NYC they attack them in the streets with baseball bats. Who else have dems got? Oprah? Michelle Obama? Not a deep bench is it? Okay, Biden's your candidate again.

On the Republican side, things are even worse. Incomprehensibly, Trump still outpolls every other GOP politician still drawing breath. And the same polls show him losing to Biden in 2024 by double digits. So the white house kids are jumping up and down for joy, right? Not so much, actually. The Department of Justice might actually indict Trump for something. Although they've taken 2 years so far, and declined to charge him with ANYTHING. If I was on Biden's team, I'd sure want Trump out of jail, and leading the republicans. Wouldn't you?

Let's assume either that (1) the DOJ grows a set of cojones, and actually files charges, resulting in the end of Trump. Or (2) that some ambitious state attorney general - looking to ascend to a senate seat or the governors mansion - is able to bring Trump to court over decades old tax returns which he didn't personally prepare. Don't laugh – it could happen. In that case, Republicans will HAVE to come up with someone not named Trump.

Um . . that person could be

Florida Governor Ron Desantis – a former house of representatives member with zero accomplishments during his “blink and you'll miss it” term in DC. And zero accomplishments while governor of Florida. Untutored in economics and foreign policy, he plans to campaign on the basis of culture wars. Presumably he will have TV cameras present when he bars the doors to unisex/desegregated school lavatory?

Mike Pence – the former VP who has spent the past 2 years attempting to explain his actions at the time of the January 6th DC insurrection. If this guy gets the nomination, I'll be amazed.

Mike Pompeo – Trumps former secretary of state, who most people find indistinguishable from Mike Pence.

Nikki Haley – Former SC governor, former UN Ambassador, but with all the charisma and energy of a turnip. This is actually who I wrote-in for on my 2020 ballot.

Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott, Tom Cotten, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Chris Christie, and 15 other people who participated in the 2016 GOP presidential debates, whom nobody wanted then, and probably haven't improved their lot since. A deeper bench than democrats, for sure, but most of these players haven't gotten a base hit in years.

I'm sure everyone can predict that CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and every other news outlet not named Fox will announce for Biden. Unless he succumbs to old age first. Biden's heart clearly isn't in this, though. He regularly makes remarks like “they don't want me to take questions” and “I wasn't briefed on that”.

Don't we deserve candidates who aren't senile, or unindicted co-conspirators?

We're running out of time to fix the upcoming presidential election process. Biden's team has already manipulated the 2024 primary schedule to hamstring any potential challengers for the white house.

Let's put Trump in a courtroom, and Biden in an assisted living home, and take a step toward competent governance, okay?

this I love

Great post - pretty much agree 100% The best thing that could happen for the USA is for Trump to be in jail (or die, or otherwise be out of the picture.) If Trump voters even had a sliver of an open mind, they would see this too (but they won't). That opens the door for the republicans to nominate someone who has a reasonable chance of winning and governing. And with Trump out of the picture, I think it is more likely that Biden will step aside and let another Democrat run.

The reality is both Biden and Trump are schiddy options for president if for no other reason that both will be around 80 years old.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@trollslayer there are probably 80 year old people who are both "sane" and "lucid". Ben Franklin probably lived that long, and continued to be effective. But then again, he was a lifelong reader and writer. not a career politician or casino/real estate mogul.

This could all become moot during this Supreme Court session, with the consideration of a case on the independent state legislature theory.

Moore v. Harper involves a bizarre legal gambit known as the independent state legislature theory. It argues that the Elections Clause of the U.S. Constitution provides state legislatures the sole authority to set the “time, place, and manner” of federal elections.

Its adoption would place legislatures outside of the purview of state constitutions, effectively ending state court judicial review of election laws or congressional district maps. There would also be no gubernatorial veto of such laws. Election administration would effectively short-circuit, as every little change would need to be approved by a legislature. And citizen-backed ballot initiatives on election or redistricting law would no longer be allowed.

Should this be decided in favor of state legislatures, even though it has no constitutional basis, elections as we know it will cease to
have meaning. State legislatures run by one party can simply refuse to recognize elections that are won by the other party, disenfranchising millions of Americans. Had this been in place in 2020, Georgia, Arizona, and other Republican-led states could simply have awarded their electoral votes to Trump and made him president, even though he did not receive the majority of votes in that state.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@windinhishair i wasn't aware of this. thanks. but here's an analogy. the constitution also provides that all laws and rights not enumerated within fall to the domain of the states. but the supreme court has repeatedly struck down state level immigration enforcement, import restrictions, foreign policy actions, etc . ..

whoever looses will blame the other side for cheating... thats what you get when you actively destroy the trust in the system
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@MoonMoon i think russia deserves some of the blame here. its state sponsored trolls have been actively sowing disrupttion and misinformation at least since 2016. if someone wants to hold congressional hearings on how facebook twitter etc continue to allow fake accounts to spew hate speech and racial attacks, i'd be in favor of that.
Amylynne · 26-30, F
it will not be fun
we need some guys UNDER 65 to run
jeancolby · 31-35, F
They tell us every time.......this is the most important election in history. well imagine that.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@jeancolby and the average voter buys into it. especiallly those who seldom vote. first time/previously unregistered voters were the key to obamas victory, then trumps in 2016
jeancolby · 31-35, F
@SusanInFlorida I know, and nothing much changes.I still get the same amount of work anyway.
ron122 · 41-45, M
I'm hoping neither one of these senile, hateful old farts run. It's time for some younger blood in the White House.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@ron122 i completel;y agree. if you're so old that we're taking away your drivers license, why would we give you the nuclear launch codes, or put you in charge of taxes?
Graylight · 51-55, F
I agree with the sentiment, but when it's based on a pile of BS as posted above, it cancels itself out.
my friend likes peaches and I like grapes, but the cheese store only cheeses.

Bravo. 👋
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
Every presidential election I look at who gets stood up and think to myself... surely they could find better candidates than this. How could do they do worse?

And then the next cycle they show me.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@ViciDraco Funny thing, that. Candidates don't just drop from the sky. They don't get paraded out like a Fall fashion line.

These are the men and women who tried to bend our ear early on in local positions and county & state offices. We've known their names from the start. The power was ours to cull the herd, to effect the outcome, to create the governments and representatives of our choosing.

But we wait for the Super Bowl after missing every game during regular season and then fashion ourselves football experts. So too do we run the nation.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Graylight the analogy is very apt given the high number of voters who attach themselves to political parties much the same way we do sports teams.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@ViciDraco "they" (political string pullers) arent interested in better candidates. they're interested in horse traders who give them something in return for their support. tax policies. subsidies for key industries. changes to regulatory code. defense manufacturing contracts. arms sales to 3rd world nations. broadcast licenses. you name it . .
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Why are you so afraid of my question?
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@LordShadowfire i was offline while working today. evidently your original question was deleted at some point. can you repost it?
pianoplayingsteve · 31-35, M
Hehe gavin gruesome. Whether democrats or republicans win, the country is still going to be a mess. By design.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@pianoplayingsteve i don't think trump and Biden happen "by design". certainly they have armies of acolytes donating money, attending rallies, and creating media mischief. but elections are decided by ordinary voters who simply don't give thought to the nature of the men they are voting for, or the long term consequences of their choices. the swing vote in a presidential election is a hgh school dropout who reads at the 5th grade level.

@HoraceGreenley other than a change to the tax code, i struggle to name any substantive trump accomplishments. was it the wall? Afghanistan? the budget deficit? entitlement spending? containment of russia and china? remedies for ransomware/hacking originating from foreign actors?
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@SusanInFlorida Seriously?

Operation Warp Speed which even by Fauci's appraisal was miraculous. Anyone that knows the FDA rralizes this was absolutely fantastic. As was the mobilization of private businesses to aid in the Pandemic response.

PPP/EIDL and the SBA relief efforts

Moving the economy from the abysmal performance under the Obama administration to a growing GDP without starting inflation. Reducing government regulation to facilitate private enterprise. Lowest minority unemployment in history. Lowest unemployment for women in more than 40 years. Increase in the labor participation rate not seen in more than 30 years.

Getting America to be a net energy exporter rather than a net energy importer. That hadn't been accomplished in more than 50 years. Energy independence made America more secure and lowered energy prices globally.

World peace with a ratcheting down of the conflict in Syria. Russia made no moves on Ukraine. Russia took Crimea under the Obama administration and invaded the country under Biden but did nothing uner the Trump administration. That was not a coincidence. Trump made it clear to Putin on his second day in office that any move against Ukraine would be disastrous for Russia. Putin obviously believed him but is not afraid of Biden or Obama. China was less aggressive in dominating the South China Sea and advances on Taiwan than it was with Obama.

Stability in the Middle East by moving closer to Saudi Arabia and away from Iran. This both reduced conflict and the influence of China and Russia on the region. Both Obama and Biden are aligned with Iran allowing Russia and China to exercise more influence in the region which is bad for the West.

Getting NATO countries to meet their financial obligations which was prescient given the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The USMCA with Canada and Mexico which renegotiated NAFTA .NAFTA was terrible. The USMCA greatly profited Mexico creating jobs in Mexico which essentially stopped Mexican illegal immigration. The USMCA greatly lowered the US trade deficit with China and assisted US exports to China. Canada also benefits in its trade with the US.

Strengthening the US military with an increased budget and the creation of the Space Force to coordinate US orbital operations for the military and intelligence community.

These are a few things off the top of my head. I'm sure I can think of more.
