@AbbeyP To answer your initial question, it's because the GOP is and has for the last few decades been working very hard to subvert democracy and ensure they hold onto power regardless of whether the majority wants them or not. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, court packing, abusing procedural norms, and, this can't be emphasized enough, multiple attempts at political violence reaching a peak in the 2020 insurrection.

@AbbeyP Probably because of as of late, Republicans by-and-large seem to be obsessed with securing petty vengeance and feeding personal grievances based on the contrived and manipulated feelings of "the base."
