ANYTHING to pander for votes

Discussions of gender identity and sexual preference are banned in many Florida classrooms because of governor Ron DeSantis’s “don’t say gay” law, alongside dozens of math textbooks blocked for “prohibited topics”.

Now the Republican who has loudly condemned what he sees as the “indoctrination” of young people has made another subject compulsory: students must receive at least 45 minutes’ instruction every November about the “victims of communism”. DeSantis signed into law House Bill 395, designating 7 November as Victims of Communism Day. Florida is one of a handful of states to adopt the designation, but is believed to be the first to mandate school instruction on that day.

DeSantis, mispronouncing the name of the revolutionary leader Che Guevara as “Che Kay-Farra”, railed against students who wear T-shirts he said were oblivious about what communism represented. “You can see at a college campus students flying the hammer and sickle from the old Soviet Union flag, you will see students that will have T-shirts with Che Guevara, you will see students that will idolize people like Mao Zedong,” he said.

“To me, this speaks of a tremendous ignorance about what those individuals represented and the evils that communism inflicted on people throughout the world. While it’s fashionable in some circles to whitewash the history of communism, Florida will stand for truth and remain as a beachhead for freedom," said the man who won't let history reflect that white people are less than fair and perfect. The reason for this, for those not in Florida, is the strong Republican leaning of many Cubans and some other Latinos. By stoking the fear-mongering fires of communism, they convince those brought up on tales of communism that it's exactly what the Dems have in store.

Sounds like the metal hysteria from the 80s. Just made young people listen to metal even more…

"Whitewash the history of communism"
Oh, my...we mustn't do that.
🤣😅🤣😆
@Carla there are no "communists" the few that might use that name are just dictators. there has not been a seriously communist nation in over 30 years, and THOSE were communist in name only like
China,
What do you think, Graylight, would be the best way to reach those who believe the negative propaganda and to educate them about what the Democrats really stand for?

It seems that when people only consume the news from their side of the fence, they close themselves off to hearing the democratic messages from all sides.

My pick would be to re-legislate that all media publications have an obligation to report all sides of an issue, irrespective of the owner's personal biases.
I would also advocate for laws concerning truth in reporting, that all reports must be based on proven facts and evidence, with heavy fines and all court costs for deliberately reporting anything false.

@hartfire While I don't believe the media is the cause behind so much of the trouble we're experiencing now, it's certainly a contributing member. I'm hard-pressed to name a single truly objective, well-rounded media outlet. Fox simply spins right to the edge of lying by omission and then covers dog tricks when it can't. CNN preaches hard to the choir and I think by contract must spend no less than 15 days of 24/7 speculation on issues. OAN and the others are simply propaganda machines. And all media for too long has taken a piece of information and run with it as an entire story. They're doing nothing but muddying the water.

In L.A., every voting cycle they (used to) offer a complimentary booklet in the mail outlining what each proposed legislation really meant, what the pros and cons of each were and which candidate supported which side of the issue and why. It educated the voting public if used. We need something like that on the federal level.

Problem is, the dollar is our god. Every decision we make, everything we included or exclude, the goals lists we create....all with the dollar as the bottom line, as the indicator of success or failure. As long as we worship in this church, we'll serve only that which gets us to that dollar, any way it can.
@Graylight I agree with you that the dollar is a poor measure of a country's success. It doesn't count well being or environmental factors.

I like your idea of the booklets. It would be worth suggesting to Biden and the Dems. I think there's a good chance they might bring it into practice.

Politicians should stop interfering with education. They can partially read history to confirm their prejudices and build their myths . . but the teachers of history must be left unmolested to teach our young people to think critically and independently.

Exaggerating again I see. Why don't you just hook up your trailer and move to California. You would fit right in there.

Hmmm, I never trust Republicans not to pander, so would need to see how it is taught. But not a big fan of the Cuban regime, either!
