Sexism by the numbers

• 84% of lawmakers who sponsored state "trigger laws" banning abortion are men.

• The laws had zero women sponsors in five states; 12 of the 13 governors who signed them into law are men.

• 91% of US senators who voted to confirm Supreme Court justices in the anti-Roe majority are men.

• A total of 380 state legislators served as lead sponsor or cosponsor of abortion bans in 13 states that take effect as soon as the high court overturns the landmark decision. They're predominantly men, too — 84%.

• In fact, five of these so-called "trigger laws" — in Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Tennessee — had zero women sponsors or co-sponsors. Of the 13 governors who signed them into law, 12 are Republican men. Yet the language in these laws specifically targets women.

The vast majority of political players behind these bans were also Republicans, including 86% of bill sponsors. All of the anti-Roe justices were nominated by Republican men and 94% of the senators who voted to confirm the justices were Republican.

Defend this.
It’s pretty obvious what’s happening, but if people don’t vote while they still can, we deserve what we get. The system was set up to favor white men in rural areas and that’s who’s in charge today even though they’re a minority.

@LeopoldBloom THIS!!!

It really comes down to how the rest of us NEED to VOTE this coming November. We have no excuse allowing our country to be ruled by extremists of any kind.
@Peapod Agreed.

@SomeMichGuy Yeppers.

I can only hope THIS will get people off their arses in November and vote out every single Republican they can. These lawmakers are dangerous and they do not represent most of America. What is being done to women is horrific and does not belong in a democracy.
PTCdresser57 · 61-69, M
Anyone with just half a brain can see what is happening in this country today. And if certain ppl have their way it is gonna get nasty in the future.
I couldn't and wouldn't defend it.

I think the answer is to legislate for in favour of mandated proportional representation. When 50% of all elected representatives are women, the culture will start to become fairer to women.

I don't know how one would legislate for racial fairness -- even though I see it as absolutely necessary. If 13% of the US identifies as Black American then that could make them a minority that never achieves full democratic equality. Similar issues would apply for Native Americans, Hispanics and migrant groups.

Also, racial numbers could change over time, based on some having far more children as part or their religious or cultural beliefs. This comes at a time when world overpopulation is one of the three biggest factors driving global warming. How does one encourage all families to have no more than 2 kids without cries of religious discrimination and racial accusations of eugenics?
No surprise. Sad, sad, sad.

In Michigan now several years ago (~20?), a female legislator was banned from saying the word "vagina" in the legislative chamber (I think the R men running things changed the rules specifically for that). She may have even been fined.

Oh, and on news reports about "restrictive new anti-abortion laws" with a US map showing the states doing so, Michigan is one of them. 😕

I try to conceive of the sheer human misery this will cause, and can’t.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Fukfacewillie I can. Kids are killing kids in the great big city I live outside of. These are not happy children. 😢

This tells me women shouldn’t be law makers

Personal convenience over preventing murder shows they can’t be impartial
Montanaman · M
@Graylight In many states, if a woman is killed by homicide, and is pregnant, it's often prosecuted as a double homicide.
Which is just. The murderer took the life of another, and deprived the life of another.
But it's a complicated issue. When does life start? Upon birth? First breath? First heartbeat? Or once sperm penatrates the egg and cells divide and thrive? Becoming life.
Just food for thought and debate.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Montanaman 38 states, you're correct. But that speaks to the knowing and intentional harm of someone else's body and whatever is contained within.

Suicide isn't murder just because killing another person is murder. Abortion is not murder simply because no one else is allowed to violently attack your body.

When does life begin? It is a complicated subject and that's why it's one that should be explored by those most directly affected, not by a 90% majority of older white men. Because their legislation has nothing at all to do with the sanctity of life. But just as with any other single issue in court, if one contends that life begins at conception, then evidence must be offered, and there is none. Not in the Bible, not in religious writings, not even in science. But in nature, things are clearer. Until conditions are right to bear children, children are not born, even it it means the body aborting the embryo. And until such time as clearer indication is offered, women should maintain control to do just that. We cannot simultaneously protest women having to wear burqas again but deny women right here access to healthcare they want.

But remember, those are My beliefs.
So long as you remember that Yeshua bar-Yosef told his followers to obey the law of the land.
PSuss1 · 56-60, M
Not a laughing matter but maybe tell the old, white men that jacking off is murder, watch them shit their pants 🤔
Graylight · 51-55, F
@PSuss1 No, just tell them their automatic monthly withdrawal in perpetuity will commence upon notification of pregnancy, retroactive to the date of conception. Just watch legislation change.

Well, golly gee willikers. Who would have guessed?

@CopperCicada A state legislature (KY? TN?) once adopted definitions for the volt, amp, and ohm such that, in those inconsistent units, Ohm's Law (V = IR) was no longer valid.

Stupidity in a matter where people will laugh, shrug, shake their heads, and do things the proper way...not a huge problem.

Stupidity with regards to one's LIFE...a violation of the Declaration & the Constitution.
