Both expressions are completely skewed

From a European point of view, the phrase "I love my country" from the mouth of a US American is just as disgusting as the phrase "Allahu akba" from the mouth of a Muslim.

I mean "Allahu Akbar" just means "God is most great." There's an argument to be made that religion is corrosive to civilization, itself, but it's hardly a disgusting phrase on its own. I find it a little strange for one's love of people to fall along geopolitical lines, but idk a lot of the people who say that shit also believe that all peoples deserve respect and dignity so it doesn't gross me out that much.

@BlueVeins the phrase itself is not disgusting at all

There is nothing wrong with patriotism as long as it isn't used to justify atrocities.
The last one although mispelled just means "god is great". Hardly a bad thing and not exclusive to Muslims despite the stereotype. You will hear those words at the local Coptic Christian Church too.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow the expression "God is great" is found in every religion. And there is nothing bad about it, nor is there anything wrong with it. actually. The same goes for "I love my country". It's nothing bad. something positive. Actually. But both terms are used to put yourself above others. And from this position to justify all subsequent actions. no matter what kind of actions.
and therefore both terms cause nausea.
@ragnalikessnow I do agree that some groups do use those expressions to imply superiority and supremacy and I have no use for that nonsense.

Amerifat patriotism is often mega cringe, but this is a super dramatic and silly statement.

For that matter, snackbars are harmless and generally meaningless interjections, and getting bent out of shape about that stuff is also silly.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Yeah because muslims laid down their lives and spent their treasure helping Europe get over its bad ideas.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@ragnalikessnow You were not aware that Americans and Canadians fought long and hard to liberate Europe from the bad ideas that Europe created? Ever heard of fascism? How about Nazis. They were created in Europe by European trash. We North Americans had to take out your trash.
ragnalikessnow · 22-25, F
@hippyjoe1955 There is hardly a European who is not aware of the history of Europe. and it is very likely that there were also Muslims when Europe was liberated.
I don't understand what that has to do with the self-image of putting oneself above others.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@ragnalikessnow If you don't have pride in your identity you will never take a stand for what you believe in. When I was just out of high school I joined the Canadian Armed Forces (Air Element) I served for a number of years before retiring. I was proud of my Canadian warrior history. Two uncles in first wave D Day. Father in law highly decorated officer at Ortona. I knew guys who wouldn't back down in Korea. They were reduced to throwing rocks at sounds in the night but they fought on and kept their position when everyone else retreated before the Chinese onslaught. I was proud of their tenacity in the face of overwhelming odds. However as of late Canada is not a place to be proud of. The nation has become very much like the enemy we fought as we went through Holland. If you asked me if I would serve again I would say no. Canada can fall apart and I could not care less.
From an American point of view .. we tend not to give a fuck what smug 20 something Europeans think. So, there's that.
ragnalikessnow · 22-25, F
@Stillwaiting That’s totally ok. Would be great, it would be true.
@ragnalikessnow .. but it is ..

As I thought, this post generated much response. However, no femmes besides Raggi (the OP) have an opinion on it? Sadly, that's a recurring theme here on SW.
DrSunnyTheSkeptic · 26-30, M
I don't see it that way and I'm European. But I do notice that Americans tend to be overly patriotic more often in comparison.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Well you certainly aren't making me more sympathetic to your cause.

I fail to see how the two are comparable.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
Never heard a muslim say allahu akba
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
But it isn't as extreme

@ravenhill haha! 😄 no. You have to endure other opinions. In your case, maybe learn to endure. By the way, that's called democracy.
