What was going on when Ronald Reagan said this that made this so important to be part of his campaign

where I got this on the Internet as a whole argument going back-and-forth about it. From one guys perspective and both sides of this. He brings up a lot of interesting things things I already know of course.

Reagan made this statement twelve years before he became president, at a Republican platform meeting in 1968. He said it in response to the urban rioting that was taking place in the aftermath of the Martin Luther King assassination.

@dancingtongue ok thank you for explaining this. I was too young then we’re actually in 68 I was not born.

That does give me some insight on it. But my workplace put this up they are Republicans. And it just bothers me because I feel no need for it I feel the very gray area.

Yes I know that they will argue in court about things that may have affected someone who committed a crime and they may go more lenient on these people for their problems in their life

Not saying that is right or wrong.

Also I believe if somebody had military service as I take that into accountability with sentencing they may go more lenient on them. Again I believe that to be true I believe I’ve heard a judge say that.

@Jonjdw The key word is "every" which acknowledges that sometimes society CAN BE at fault for helping create the situation. So the question should be was Reagan criticizing the protesters after King's Assassination for blaming society for their actions (as most conservatives believe) or was he claiming King's assassin was solely accountable for his death and not racism or the Civil Rights turmoil. As with most of Reagan's aphorisms, deliberately designed to be taken two ways feeding the base while being defensible to critics.
Same as today.. you let BLM and antifa cause millions in damage in the name of justice.. when they are actually committing crimes..

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout at one time so I’ve heard places like what was attacked. We’re open to the public now they are locked of course for safety reasons because this is how our world has come to now

These people that did this have their beliefs that our government is lying. And corrupted and yes it is.

These people went to go do something about it granted in the wrong way but they’re going to get anything done by doing nothing

Unless they continuously write letters arguing their side and even that mostly doesn’t work
@Jonjdw I’m out.. Reagan made that statement for civil unrest and property destruction stemming from Martin Luther kings Assassination..
I answered your Q.. now you wanna argue about it..

Sorry inconvenient facts get in the way for you..

Dont burn and loot just because you’re mad.. SIMPLES

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout yes you are right thanks for clarifying what Reagan was talking about.

Such a great quote
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@MasterLee maybe I read too much into it. But if you go to the website that I got it on and read about it I’m not wrong.

What was going on at that time but that was so important.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@MasterLee my workplace has also had this up on the bulletin board along with other political stuff and other kinds of stuff but they change monthly
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@Jonjdw pretty much the same as now. We were able to sift through media bs a lot easier back then.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Actually it is quite similar to Goldwater's "Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice. Moderation in the pursuit of justice no virtue." Inflammatory if read one way; arguably balanced with the qualifiers. Reagan of course was Goldwater's biggest campaigner and disciple.
@dancingtongue That is kind of what I meant. Several conservatives have put their own spin on essentially the same statement for decades now and not just in the US. Thatcher has said some things that line up with the same belief system too.
Just a bog standard slogan that would have been par for the course for Reagan or Barry Goldwater or any other. And they are the same people who based on ideology will tell you society doesn't exist.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
I do think this is the Republicans trying to lie and make it seem like Democrats want to let people do whatever they want

Like there’s a big problem with this. And there isn’t blowing out of proportion.

Cause problems where there are no problems
