People are stupid about risks, something we can observe all the time. It doesn’t matter how bad prisons are because people don’t think they’ll be caught. It’s why pickpockets liked to work crowds watching other pickpockets get hanged. Deterrence only goes so far.

@sunsporter1649 Leave it to an older "gentleman" to not understand how the fucking system works. Prisoners are already treated like shit and forced into slavery all for the benefit of the state. They hardly get any money, they have zero rights, and are constantly being violated not only by other inmates, but by the guards and wardens as well.
In Norway, they actually get treated like human beings and are offered help and a second chance at life. It's shown to be successful for small time offenders -- people who wind up doing petty things like theft, drug possession, illegal firearms possession... Those people can be rehabilitated and given skills to become productive members of society who don't repeat their offenses.
But sure, let's go ahead and punish anyone who ever did anything wrong, big or small. Turn them all into beings that are treated less than animals and locked away for life while the state profits off their needless suffering.
