The House Votes to Remove Confederate Statues in the U.S. Capitol.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to remove all Confederate statues from public display in the U.S. Capitol, along with replacing the bust of former Chief Justice of the United States Roger Taney, author of the 1857 Dred Scott decision that declared that people of African descent were not U.S. citizens.

The House passed the measure 285-120. All Democratic members supported the legislation; all 'no' votes came from Republican members.

Let the Senate's "Confederate Caucus" (AKA the Republican Party) filibuster this!

Just like what happened in New York City, with President Theodore Roosevelt, one of the most progressive and non racist Presidents in history. The real issue is most have no idea of American History.🤔
@Oster1 Lee also failed to free the slaves when he took over the plantation he inherited from his father-in-law George Washington Parke Custis, despite the clause in Custis' will specifying that his slaves were to be freed upon his death. Lee's treatment of the slaves nearly led to a revolt. Lee also sold off slaves to such a degree that only one intact family remained on the plantation by the time the Civil War began.

However, regardless of Lee's personal feelings about the institution, the fact that he freely chose to defend the Confederacy, which was established for the sole purpose of perpetuating slavery, makes any equivocation worthless. Lee will be forever remembered for his efforts in perpetuating the right of white people to own Black people and work them to death for profit.

The flowery language of Norris' account is typical of writing at that time. The other option would have been for someone to transliterate it into fake Black vernacular, i.e. "Dat massa Lee done whupped us fo' runnin' off," another current style. The fact that you find the account unbelievable because of how it's written doesn't mean it didn't happen.

@MarmeeMarch It must be strange for you to see two people engaging in an intelligent discussion with minimal insults.

@Pinkstarburst No one is saying to "erase history," we're saying that statues honoring traitors should be removed. But I can see how that would be a problem for conservatives who don't read books, so if the statue of Robert E. Fuckface is gone, they won't know who he was.

@Pinkstarburst Yes Exactly! I love this!😊🤗🌷

Yeah let’s pretend our history doesn’t exist. Remove all remnants of it. Especially that part where it was democrats kept people enslaved. Funny thing is when those people were enslaved the democrats didn’t need their votes. Now that they’re not enslaved they do. Go figure.

@JesseInTX

Don't confuse history with honor.

No one is arguing to "erase" history. That's a red herring.
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
@beckyromero don’t blind yourself. People are trying to erase history. Not just monuments, but what’s being taught in classrooms. In Chicago people want Lincoln park renamed and the statue of Abraham Lincoln removed. And he signed the emancipation proclamation. Open your eyes.

What's NOT being taught in classrooms?

I'm a proponent of teaching MORE history and government in the classrooms.

Students need to know their rights under the Constitution.

And, it's not the least bit coincidental that the Confederates that the Democrats voted to remove from the Capitol were largely Democrats, i.e., Jefferson Davis, Roger Taney, John Calhoun, Alexander Stephens, and Charles Aycock who was an avowed white supremacist as were many Southern Democrats. Revisionist history?

Instead of using the statues as teaching moments about flawed thinking in light of the principles that all are created equal in the modern U.S., let's pretend they never existed. Perhaps remove from Statuary Hall and other places of prominence, but an exhibit that details decisions undertaken that undermined the rights of the individual and why, so that it doesn't happen again, would not be a bad idea, and fitting for the Capitol where they served. Returning the statues to their respective states so that they can be hidden and we can pretend that it never happened doesn't help anyone heal. Then again, people today don't want historical discourse and context, they want to smash things with which they don't agree, which solves nothing.
@toddr13 Interesting how the most racist Republicans voted to keep a bunch of statues of Democrats up.

If you think people only learn history by staring at statues, you've got a weird idea of how learning works.
Painting of antifa radicals tearing down a statue of King George III. This is why the American Revolution is unknown today.

demonocrats that embarrassed about their past, eh?

@MarmeeMarch Well, there are a lot of Jews in NYC. But calling Jews "Hymies" is insulting, same as calling poor countries "shitholes."

Biden had very high support among Black voters, so maybe they know something you don't. You're not the spokesman for Black America, Adolf.

The statues should be put in a museum or something, because pretending like they never existed isn’t the answer either.

The history of America is still what it is, and no amount of removing statues will be as meaningful as fixing the communities affected by Americas sick past specifically black America.
How can you teach children the failures/liberal'S fault lines, when the left send out the zamboni to Shazam away their origin? Deeply rooted in deciet by sorcery .
@luckranger71 my car runs off of gasoline, and my body runs off nutrients, not unicorn urine, thank you, but no thank you I'm all set with 20th century monolog/sci-fi.
@checkoutanytime Those statues are not of liberals and were not erected by liberals. However, since you ask, you teach children through history books and discussion, not field trips to stare at statues.

LOL it looks like Marmee blocked me again.

He wrote a few responses but apparently isn't aware that I can't see them after he blocked me.
They should vote to nuke the South, time to get rid of those losers.

@independentone I live in Georgia. We’re a state with a liberal majority, held hostage by an illegitimate Republican state government that relies on voter suppression to stay in power. Texas, Florida, and North Carolina are similar. The other states are hopeless.

@Stereoguy Um, not after the war. There are no statues of Hitler in Germany today. Many statues honoring Confederates were not erected until years after the war. Critical thinking is not your forte. Back to the kiddie table for you!
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@luckranger71 actually, Germany had a country wide vote, asking, if they’d like to keep or remove statues etc, of Adolf Hitler, The people of Germany decided, they did not want to keep the statues etc, of Hitler, so they were removed, The people decided, not just a small minority of the country, and I don’t think they used Dominion voting machines either 😳

@beckyromero Technically, a "troll" is someone who makes deliberately provocative statements that may not even be appropriate to the subject under discussion, with the sole motive of upsetting people. A troll may or may not even support their own statement.
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@Lila15 Not to drag on much more about this, but

@Spoiledbrat asked about Confederate leaders:
How are they traitors? They just did what was legal.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@beckyromero Is that "trolling?" It was legal for them to own slaves, but it certainly wasn't legal for them to secede from the US and declare their own country. Zebrawl's statement was either poorly worded or just ignorant.
