The House Votes to Remove Confederate Statues in the U.S. Capitol.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to remove all Confederate statues from public display in the U.S. Capitol, along with replacing the bust of former Chief Justice of the United States Roger Taney, author of the 1857 Dred Scott decision that declared that people of African descent were not U.S. citizens.

The House passed the measure 285-120. All Democratic members supported the legislation; all 'no' votes came from Republican members.

Let the Senate's "Confederate Caucus" (AKA the Republican Party) filibuster this!

Yeah let’s pretend our history doesn’t exist. Remove all remnants of it. Especially that part where it was democrats kept people enslaved. Funny thing is when those people were enslaved the democrats didn’t need their votes. Now that they’re not enslaved they do. Go figure.

Not pretending anything didn't exist.

Just not honoring those who betrayed their country to keep people enslaved.

TRAITORS!

@beckyromero how about those who created this country who enslaved people? Should we remove George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams (Sr and Jr), etc? Our history is filled with some bad things no doubt. But it’s that history that brought us to where we are today. I love though how everyone here is so enamored with the English monarchy and how proud the Brits are of it, yet they perpetuated some of the most egregious crimes against humanity in the history of the world. Guess what- they don’t anymore. They’ve evolved as have we. Their kings and queens are still remembered. As were those that opposed them. And that’s just one country.

Don't confuse history with honor.

No one is arguing to "erase" history. That's a red herring.

@beckyromero don’t blind yourself. People are trying to erase history. Not just monuments, but what’s being taught in classrooms. In Chicago people want Lincoln park renamed and the statue of Abraham Lincoln removed. And he signed the emancipation proclamation. Open your eyes.

What's NOT being taught in classrooms?

I'm a proponent of teaching MORE history and government in the classrooms.

Students need to know their rights under the Constitution.
