How did we get here ?

Libertarian Fan Fiction aided a lot.
You know, those thinkers that compare anny form of taxation and redistibution to some form of Stalinist dystophia. The moment you get taxed as an individual or the community says that it's probably better to rethink what consequences freedoms of individuals have became a reason to bring up the early soviet union and triggers some form of high sensitivity.

Biggest examples of thinkers like this and books that became popular in the English speaking world:

These ideas came in touch with conservative fanfiction. You know, those people that believe in liberty and freedom as long as God says it's okay. Hayeck was already deeply religious and then you get thinkers like Thomas Sowell. Who talks about how the welfare state destroyed "the family". Because freedom is okay, but getting divorce because you made wrong choices or the person you love seems to be an asshole over time... is not. You have to stick together because it's just better for you and for the economy. Not only is there a God, the economy is also an entity that needs to be appeased no matter what the consequences of the economy are for real people. If they have to stick together because they are economically not able to divorce, then they should appease the economy and the kids.

And all of this started to bled together and being projected by diffrent media that is sponsored by those that are really better off. The Koch family to name just one. And before you know it you have a bunch of poor bums that believe they shouldn't be able to go to the doctor because they weren't able to pay for it. Or you have a generation of boomers that gained really well of social systems, were able to go to school, enjoyed the economic upswing after the 2nd world war, bought a piece of land and a house because it was still possible... while gradually pushing up housing prices just because they were able to put some fancy stuff in low cost neighbourhoods. And now they are in their late 50s or older and they don't wanna pay taxes because that's just a form of tyrany bla bla bla bla. And because this is a really large part of the community (hence the baby boom) they have a lot of democratic power. And thus all these conservative fan fiction sites try to convince them that the public education they got when they were younger shouldn't be payed for by tax dollars now because well, it's just really evil to tax people. And that all of this will eventually create a utopia that they officially don't believe in.

30 years ago a family of 5 could not only live on one wage.. but pay off a house, a car. Go on a modest holiday and give the kids a decent birthday and xmas..

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout My employer thinks that because she hired me for health care that she OWNS me. I have said what I want. I guess she doesn't like me having a life outside work. Another problem with health care...

Capitalism without direction.

It coincided with the rhetoric that finally push the right over the edge with unhinged fear that the 'others' were coming for everything they had.
@Graylight Which "others"?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@PoetryNEmotion Any "others." Anyone you wouldn't go shopping at the mall with, invite to the barbecue, or want to be room moms with. The kind of others that don't share your skin color or same status or same culture. Anyone who isn't indistinguishable from you.
@Graylight I hear you now. Thank you.

I completely agree. Though I did have an interesting conversation with my mother about how there are many expenses we consider necessary today that were not the case just a few decades ago: cable TV, cell phones, computers and tablets, Internet, ..... Her point was that is one reason why so many families have two working spouses these days (which then also creates day care costs). Obviously there’s more going on than that but I thought it was an interesting point.

@Harmonium1923 All of that stuff can be had on the cheap tbh, it's a matter of priorities. If you have internet, you don't need cable TV. Last gen phones and tablets are dirt cheap. Etc, etc. Of course, the market is better than ever at making people buy stuff they don't actually need.

It's definitely an issue, but people tend focus on it as a way to ignore the inexorable rise in the fundamentals like housing and education, and corresponding stagnation in real wages. Single-income families were on their way out long before we got smartphones.
@Harmonium1923 I think people need to understand that they don't NEED all of those things. I think about retirement a lot. How I will have to keep working. I am researching alternative careers. I am onto something I think. Priorities. I think many see others with all the bells and whistles so they try to compete. How big a home does one need? Does one need a tv in every room? Do your kids too? How much stuff is enough? I was once married to a very material person. No matter how much he had, it wasn't enough. It was sad and pathetic. Buy only what you need. Wants and needs are two separate idea. Hi, H!

It started out with the birds and bees, and then an asshole was born, and then another one, and then another one...

This is what happens when you allow business to sell out your people for corporate profiteering.

It’s a lesson still not being learned even after the largest working generation have retired and is costing the government more than they bargained for in much needed benefits because their pensions just don’t cover the expense of growing old today.
Is it mostly politics? Could it be some of some other things too? I mean people like to stir the pot with politics and/or religion.
