I don’t get why we have monuments to confederates. We have a series of monuments or fly a confederate flag and celebrate traitors who tried to tear apart the union. If you are an actual patriot, it is rather bizarre. And when compound why the confederates were seceding...it is monstrous. It wasn’t over states right.
And I say this as a lifelong libertarian leaning republican. I challenge anyone who supports this beyond formal free speech statements to really ponder the statement being made.
@Sunujing There's a street here in my city called Balbo street. It's named after Italo Balbo, who was the Marshall of the Air Force in fascist Italy, commander in chief of the Blackshirt organization, and Benito Mussolini's directly named heir-apparent. He was basically the second in command of WWII Italy. And yet we named a street after him.
People defend Confederate landmarks under the assertion that it's a preservation and celebration of culture rather than hatred or racist ideals. What I don't understand about that is what specific culture did the Confederacy have, exactly? I know there's a lot of Southern culture. The Southern United States has a lot of unique and valued culture, history, and heritage. But the Confederacy existed for only five short years. Was there any culture that was specific to the Confederacy that needs to be kept alive?
Trump and Stuart Jones from the State Department announced that during the COVID-19 pandemic there would be a temporary suspension of the bombing campaign in Yemen, emphasis on the "temporary" part. But there wouldn't be a suspension on the blockade. So they'll stop dropping fuel-air bombs on populated cities in a defenseless country that did not attack the USA, but they won't stop starving them to death.
Because every day this tripe is in the news nobody is mentioning the ever increasing death toll through stupid public policies like stay open for business during a pandemic.
But @Sunujing is correct when he says why are you even allowing monuments to those who did their best to kill the idea of a United States of America ? These people were traitors to the supposed ideal and anyone still waiving the Confederate flag for that ideal should probably be treated the same way.
@Picklebobble2 The death toll is mentioned EVERY DAY.
THIS is the problem.I have with you and the fact that 5 people liked this comment.
If YOU are only listening to the news about this and NOT hearing about the number of deaths to covid or Black people(because hey, they have a threat to their life dounle time right now) then you ARE NOT paying attention.
I have heard the death toll every day. It is on the news. The numbers pop up everywhere on the internet. It isnt hard to go look it up.
Pay attention and please STOP perpetuating a false narrative about the "news doesn't talk about it anymore" or "they wont tell you this"
That is bullshit. This stuff is reported every damn day. I know..because I am fucking crazy hyper vigilant right now.
@JaggedLittlePill My comment was based on the original question. The fact YOU don't like the answer i gave probably means it's YOU who has the problem.
Nobody gives a toss about monuments or statues or any other landmark erected because a local dignitary was wealthy enough to pay toget one erected in his hometown.
The point is it's a distractionary tactic to fill folks heads with historical nonsense at a time when the government is willing to watch folk of ALL colours die because they WON'T take a MODERN illness SERIOUSLY.
It's all about noise. The Veterans' Memorial Preservation Act, already on the books since 2003, provides that kind of protection.
His voter base is clueless, so he needs some fresh material, to remind them that while he has be somewhat closeted about it, he's still the same old racist they voted for.

So he just told every African American in this country to go fuck themselves. And his drooling, bigoted sycophants will just lap it up. Listen people, I know Joe's old, I know he ain't the sharpest. But for fuck's sake America, find your Goddamn souls and throw Trumpo in the trash where he belongs.
@BluntSm0ker Indeed, but the controversy is whether it should be on public land or not. There's a place for history like that, in museums, in the historical society, in private collections. In my home country of Serbia, we preserved many of the landmarks and statues and other such things erected in honor of odious characters like Slobodan Milosevic (with whom I even share a last name) and Milan Babic, but we have them in institutions which aren't funded by people's tax money. Because it's rather insulting to ask people to pay a portion of their taxes to maintenance monuments that were built to honor a person who committed a genocide against their ancestors.
That’s who’s been supporting him. White supremacists, particularly in the southern states. And that’s to whom Trump is beholden. He couldn’t have made it any clearer.
@bijouxbroussard And so what he did was render a toothless executive order to Federal protections that have already been in existence for years. And they keep drinking the Kool-Aid.
@bijouxbroussard @Graylight Trump may be running over 10 points down to Biden for US president, but he is running way ahead to replace Jefferson Davis as President of the Confederacy.
@JaggedLittlePill Yes. Trump would rather defend Confederate statues than actual troops in Afghanistan. And he won't push back against Putin's bounty. Putin owns Trump.
