What are your opinions on trumps/US governments stance on venezuela?

Particularly interested in democrats and anti-trumpers view on this but all opinions welcome 👌

It's an attempted coup or an attempt at starting civil war in Venezuela. The start of another f*ckup of a regime change similar to but not the same as Libya, Iraq, Syria etc...
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
It is none of the U.S. business who misgoverns Venezuela.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
🤷‍♂️ I think anyone who thinks socialism is a good idea should move to Venezuela...
gol979 · 41-45, M
@wildbill83 consistently refusing to answer any questions that are based on your responses....... "confident facts". Should be easy for you to say one of these facts?

Just look at the period of post ww2 until the 70s. Very socialist policies enacted (huge infrastructure projects, regulation on the finance markets and the flow of capital across borders, creating millions of jobs in the environmental sector (fdr, in your country), welfare state that has fiscal multipliers, a progressive tax system, laws that state the owners of a company could only earn a certain percentage more than the lowest paid worker etc, etc). This led to the biggest economic growth globally ever seen.

Then what happened in the 70s??

I answered your question, that's how you have a conversation
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@gol979 pointless to respond to someone whose oblivious to history and ignores context

your response is a better example... what you call "socialist policies" is actually capitalism. socialist polices didn't create infrastructure and jobs, government subsidies did; and the profit generated returns to the market and self fortifies.

The trouble with debating with "pro-socialists" is that they ignore all the bad examples of socialism (Nazi Germany/East Germany, USSR, China, Vietnam, North Korea/DPRK, Loas, Burma, Libya, Syria, Iraq, etc.) and use Democratic, free market examples that aren't even socialist.

What happened in the 70's? OPEC happened... so what's your point?

Quite frankly, I don't have the time nor the desire to write a 100 page essay on the evils of socialism on SW. If you haven't figured it out for yourself by now, you probably never will; so it would be pointless for me to try and convince you otherwise.

"If socialists understood economics they wouldn't be socialists" - Friedrich Hayek
gol979 · 41-45, M
@wildbill83 ok. We disagree......but we are living in hayek's version of free market (it isn't free, but hey ho) deregulated capitalism. The Chicago boys etc and look what that got us and where we are now.

Again going on about socialist policies but when asked to name just one, you can't.

And even if those countries you mention were socialist......what happened to the majority of them. Invaded by us??

It would not be a good idea for the U.S. to invade Venezuela. On the fact that everywhere else the government has interfered, it did not end well and made things worse.
Another opportunity for another self-aggrandizing speech and more fear mongering to his base supporters. He talks about restoring democracy to the people of Venezuela yet he undermines it here in our country. "The United States will never be a Socialist country." I agree, we are, however, a Social Democracy (Mandatory basic education, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) because we believe that the only thing that we have to rely on, in this life, is each other.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@softspokenman yep. But what's your opinion on the stance the government is taking, specifically in Venezuela?
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
I don’t really think we should be engaging in nation building or sponsoring a coup in Latin America, that speaks to the times best left in the past. At the same time Maduro took democracy off the table in Venezuela, and seems like a scumbag of the first order.

Socialism is a red herring here, tbh. Maduro is an incompetent thug, and Venezuela would be in the shitter regardless of which philosophy he pays lip service to.
LonelyMan · M
As long as we don't send troops down there, I support whatever they do to get rid of Madura.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@LonelyMan again, no mention of the sanctions imposed. No mention of the bank of America and England withholding $8 billion from Venezuela?

If you're worried about the starving people then do you agree that we should remove these sanctions, release their assets/money that would alleviate the plight of the Venezuelan public?
LonelyMan · M
I will plead ignorance on the details you bring up. I don't know much on Vevezuela, but I do believe Madura and Chavez have ruined their nation- Socialism does not work- period, Sure the media distorts the truth, but usually they distort it in favor of Socialists and liberals. You obviously are very passionate about this, and I'm sure you know more than I do about this subject.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@LonelyMan that's cool and I'm a rank amateur to be honest but cheers for the ego boost (not needed lol).

I disagree with your view on socialism and the slant of the msm but it's all good to disagree.

Venezuela definitely made a.few errors and should have divested its economy from relying solely on oil and maduro has made one big decision that could be interpreted as anti-democratic.

Saying that. We have zero right to impose another president and plead with the Venezuelan military to back this coup......plus they have potentially the largest source of oil in the world and John Bolton has said that's what the US wants.

If we are.going to espouse democracy and human rights we should at the very least practice what we preach rather than use it as an excuse to invade other countries
Budwick · 70-79, M
I think Trump encouraging Venezuelan military to stand down, allow delivery of humanitarian aid and support for interim president are all good.

If you didn't already know the leftists would be against whatever Trump says or does you've not been paying attention.
MethDozer · M
I have no reason to think about Venezuela.
Platoscave · F
@MethDozer so why answer? huh?
