Brexit explained in simple terms:
David Cameron made a promise he didn't think he'd have to keep to have a referendum he didn't think he would lose. Boris Johnson decided to back the side he didn't believe in because he didn't think it would win. Then Gove, who said he wouldn't run, did, and Boris who said he would run, said he wouldn't, and Theresa May who didn't vote for Brexit got the job of making it happen. She called the election she said she wouldn't and lost the majority David Cameron hadn't expected to win in the first place. She triggered Article 50 when we didn't need to and said we would talk about trade at the same time as the divorce deal and the EU said they wouldn't so we didn't. People thought she wouldn't get the divorce settled but she did, but only by agreeing to separate arrangements for Northern Ireland when she had promised the DUP she wouldn't. Then the Cabinet agreed on a deal but they hadn't, and David Davis who was Brexit Secretary but wasn't said it wasn't what people had voted for and he couldn't support what he had just supported and left. Boris Johnson who hadn't left then wished that he had and did, but it was a bit late for that. Dominic Raab becomes the new Brexit secretary. People thought Theresa May wouldn't get a withdrawal agreement negotiated, but once she had they wished that she hadn't, because hardly anybody liked it whether they wanted to leave or not. Jacob Rees-Mogg kept threatening a vote of no confidence in her but not enough people were confident enough people would not have confidence in her to confidently call a no-confidence vote. Dominic Raab said he hadn't really been Brexit Secretary either and resigned, and somebody else took the job but it probably isn't worth remembering who they are as they're not really doing the job either as Olly Robbins is. Then she said she would call a vote and didn't, that she wouldn't release some legal advice but had to, that she would get some concessions but didn't, and got cross that Juncker was calling her nebulous when he wasn't but probably should have been. At some point Jacob Rees Mogg and others called a vote of no confidence in her, which she won by promising to leave, so she can stay. But they said she had really lost it and should go, at the same time as saying that people who voted Leave knew what they were voting for which they couldn't possibly have because we still don't know now, and that we should leave the vote to Leave vote alone but have no confidence in the no-confidence vote which won by more. The government also argued in court against us being able to say we didn't want to leave after all but it turned out we could. She named a date for the vote on her agreement which nobody expected to pass, while pretending that no deal which nobody wants is still possible (even though we know we can just say we are not leaving), and that we can't have a second referendum because having a democratic vote is undemocratic. And of course as expected she loses. Some people are talking about a managed no-deal which is not a deal but is not no-deal either.
Thank goodness for strong and stable government."
It wasn't my work but I wish it was. 馃ぃ

Didn't something like 534-53 MPs vote for the referendum, Cameron's referendum was in their manifesto then the country voted and leave won and if it had not been a fix up and they voted in a remainer, we would have now had left with a good deal....the reason our country is in chaos is because those who voted remain, have left this country in a weak position.....we are still being stitched up..

@Platinum think anyone with any ounce of sense , would want it, we are a small country and can not keep taking hundreds of thousands every year, it is just common sense,

@Platinum Nor should you ! As Brexit is to the Brits. So Trump is to the Americans.
Sounds good as a soundbite, but lousy once you let politicians dictate policy......or not, as the case may be.

That's a fn' long arse paragraph for "simple terms".

@Dan193 We Brits have a sarcastic sense of humour. 馃槣
Dan19331-35, M
@Burnley123 I read it either way. I think it makes more sense to the brits.
Burnley12341-45, M
@Dan193 It makes little sense to us, our Government included.*

*BTW, that is sarcastic but it's also not really sarcastic.
CountScrofula41-45, M
This is pretty brilliant.
CountScrofula41-45, M
@Burnley123 I look forward to the Armando Innuci movie in a few years.
Burnley12341-45, M
@CountScrofula I think the guy is brilliant but FFS, how can you write this? The truth satirises itself more than you could make up, like the Trump White House. 馃ぃ

PS. Have you seen The Thick of It?
CountScrofula41-45, M
@Burnley123 I have and adore it, and this is too crazy for fiction. I was thinking something along hte lines of Death of Stalin because just the story of conniving backbiters self-sabotaging in craven quests for power is ... well kinda perfect.
Nothing is simple without paragraphs.

As an ignorant yank, i'd love to understand, but this isn't doing it for me.

@MistyCee So would I lol.

On a serious note: this is written by an American dude who has done some proper research. I hope this helps:

@Burnley123 thanks for the link. It's a start.

@MistyCee You're welcome

Basically, Cameron vandalised this country to fuck, then fucked off and left the mess for someone else fo clean up. Shame she turned out to woefully inadequate. But to be fair, this mess is so intricately complicated a super computer couldnt fix it.

I remember when he won the leadership, and subsequently won the General election id sometimes see him refered to as a 'chancer'. Seems he took one or two chances too many. And here we all are.

@Jm31xxx Cameron is doing fine on his luxury yacht holidays and hanging out in his designer shed.

Thank you, however in my mind nothing is simple about Brexit. I am continually confused by it all.
Burnley12341-45, M
@curiosi So am I miss. We Brits deal with difficult and complex situations with gallows-humour and irony. This post is taking the piss out of the Brexit mess.
Ironicman56-60, M
I love it! But you forgot to mention Jeremy Couldhavebyn. To put it into context the Brexit saga has morphed into an utter sham and Jeremy and his opposition team missed open goals along the way. Labour have the talent and the policies, they simply don't have the right manager.
Burnley12341-45, M
@Ironicman I find it frustrating sometimes when people say this. There is no way that Labour would have had the same policies under a different leader. The 2015 manifesto was austerity lite and Labour MPs showed no indication of wanting to move away from that at the time. The most conventionally talented politicians in the Shadow Cabinet (McDonnell, Starmer, Thornberry and Raynor) are people who rose under Corbyn.

I do have my issues with Labour's Brexit strategy. They cannot negotiate a substantially better deal with the EU than what May has and to say so is a bit ridiculous.

I don't think they can stop Brexit though because they are not in power and because a large minority of Labour voters support Brexit anyway. I would like them to come out for a second ref but that would involve taking a huge political hit and I'm not sure that they would be successful.

@Burnley123 It would be interesting to see the party voting intentions of Brexit supporters in the general public. I have a feeling that Labour might be more exposed than the Conservatives and thats why Corbyn's policy has been to try to hedge his bets and wait for the shit to firmly hit the Tory fan.
Burnley12341-45, M
@SW-User That is pretty much it.
