UC Berkeley, did a comprehensive study on the effects of raising the minimum wage, to $15, by 2023, in California. Some of the key findings:

1. The retail, restaurant and health services industries are effected the most. They can account for the increase, by raising their prices by 0.6%, across the board.

2. Increases in productivity will likely erase the effect of wage increase.

3. Across the board, there are benefits in education, at the family level, and healthcare.

Now, back to Mike. If he's doing a job, that paid him $12, form day one, I don't get what he's complaining about. If it took him 5 years, to get to this pay level, then he should take a hard look at his future. His job is obsolete? why? There will be more people competing for his groceries bagging job?

Dude, if you have an answer to the question then just answer it.
I second this question. How does someone else's life getting better while yours stays the same affect you negatively?

Mitch will get more because he is so good at bagging groceries.

I don't understand that problem.

1) He's wrong because when minimum wage goes up, people making the previous minimum wage often get a little bump. At least in these parts.
2) How is his job obsolete by virtue of the fact that he's now making the same as someone who was making less?
3) The cost of living is always going up, hence the minimum wage hike.

When min wage is raised it does raise other workers wages, not on day one but slowly over a couple year period, and also the prices of goods and services. Almost before you know it, the person who got the "new" min wage is right back in the same spot he was in before min wage was raised. He hasn't gained any buying power.
Graylight · 51-55, F
The minimum wage increases becsuse the cost of living increases, not the other other way around.

As for his well-paying job, I feel deeply for his hurt pride. 🙄

The last statement is idiotic.

@Graylight hahaha that's funny

We have a saying around these parts hasn't failed us yet ...

[big]Everyone does better when everyone does better.[/big]

That would be ignoring the many other market factors that influence the cost of goods and services.

minimum wage laws leave people with minimum skills without opportunities. No one can be employed at a job worth only $6/hr if the minimum wage is $8/hr.

There are jobs worth less per hour to anyone than the legally mandated minimum wage. How do those jobs get done?

@redredred
How do those jobs get done?
Um...they continue to get done because they are necessary/they are someone's business. So they keep getting done, it's just that the employees earn a little more.
Northwest · M
@redredred Interesting, so grocery stores, will have to cancel grocery bagging jobs, and people will be told to bag their own groceries. Restaurants will fire wait staff. Your Amazon orders will be unfilled, because the company would have to fire all the people who were making less than $15 per hour.

In reality, none of this happened in Washington State.
redredred · M
No. There are jobs that are not worth $8/hr. Often, these days, those get done by simple machines. Only the manufacturer of the machine gets paid and only once. No one gets paid after that. Already counter help at McDonalds is disappearing. That was once an entry level job that taught people how to hold a job and meet responsibility. Minimum wage laws destroyed that. Leftards call that progress. @Pikachu

Never ending cycle.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Generally speaking, yes, his wages will also rise, due to increased competition between employers at this price point. That's the reason why they currently offer payment above minimum wage after all.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Correct. You’re at least for now screwed.

@Emosaur Of course in my day we didn't have that problem because WE got ourselves an education and decent jobs with advancement opportunities. Min wage jobs were done by high school and college kids and sometimes empty nesters who were bored. Only a fucking moron would think he could support himself on min wage or the skills that pay min wage. But the dumb ass youth of today thinks the world owes them something but the fact is we don't owe you damned morons shit. Get over yourselves and learn something.
