McCain knew this would crush his political aspirations and claims he stayed and refused his own release out of solidarity with the others in his POW camp. The NVC wasnt too happy about him doing that and it cost him the use of that arm and several other men's lives.
That's what the grapevine had to say about it. I would tend to believe he was a Rhino, based on his track record in the Senate.
