Does the government In america spend more on education than Defence?

Pretty sure the total numbers are 834.5 billion for defense and 983.5 billion for education. It took me a second to figure out how the left is saying weird things like we spend more on defense than education. What they do is compare federal budgets and considering Educations local and state budgets account for more than 880 billion. So yeah the federal government doesn't put a whole lot towards education but it is a fact we spend more on education in the US than defense in 2017.

Perhaps true, but still on a Federal level, there is a TON of money going to defense and very little going toward education.

@SpaceAce No I understand and right if you look at the whole bundle, "we" do spend more on education. Though the Federal government spends a truckload more on defense than education.

I have no problem with a strong defense, however, I worry much of that defense money is just pork spending.

@Pherick That is a valid concern, personally I would bet more of that education spending is pork spending. Look at the salaries for school board members in detroit for example. I guess what everyone can agree on is we spend a lot of money and anyone skimming should be locked up.
Pherick · 41-45, M
@SpaceAce I do agree on that.

Thwy spend more in trumps security and trips to golf courses than on education

We have 2 soccer, fields, 3 baseball fields, and 3 gymnasiums, and no paper and not enough books for everyone......
There's also ssomething known as responsible spending.
Pherick · 41-45, M
@Virgo79 Agreed and this is happening at all levels, tons of investment in sports, and extra stuff, very little in actual school and learning.
Education is a state level expenditure.
@SpaceAce yes,not federal.

@FreeSpirit1 the feds do spend money on education. here is a link to education spending for federal and stage from 1980 to 2016.

@katielass I know they do but people don't depend on federal money to run their local schools. It's the federal govt getting involved in activities that have nothing to do with running the federal govt.
I've said the right would rather spend more on defense than education, because based upon the programs they cut first when they get into power, that's been provable.

@bijouxbroussard Intelligent educated people did not put Trump in the White House. Expect more cuts, and he will probably start picking on libraries.

@nudistsueaz What we'd tried up to 1941 was hiding our head in the sand. We tried not to be involved at all in global affairs; that didn't work once we were goaded.

@SW-User Your right in a way, but don't forget we were in peace talks with the Japanese when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, diplomacy.

@nudistsueaz That is true.

The numbers are difficult metrics to use, since money in both categories is often spent very inefficiently.
katielass · F
Of course and look what were getting. Nothing.

More fake news....that's all.
