Does the government In america spend more on education than Defence?

Pretty sure the total numbers are 834.5 billion for defense and 983.5 billion for education. It took me a second to figure out how the left is saying weird things like we spend more on defense than education. What they do is compare federal budgets and considering Educations local and state budgets account for more than 880 billion. So yeah the federal government doesn't put a whole lot towards education but it is a fact we spend more on education in the US than defense in 2017.

@SW-User This only adds up to a little over $1trillion. Federal spending is close to $4 trillion.

@SW-User OK. I see this is only discretionary spending. But as a whole, the USA spends much more on education than military spending as education is paid for almost entirely on the state and local level.

@Ellen I really think it depends on the numbers we're looking at. Departments and agencies are often creative with their allocations and some programs include or exclude things differently than others.

What isn't in dispute is that the USA spends more on military than the other top 7 or 8 nations combined. Better diplomacy and less aggression results in less spending.

@SW-User Well..just sticking with the OP question, more is spent on education than defense (in the USA).
Diplomacy vs. aggression..I agree. Diplomacy is better if the outcome is positive. The problem is those aggressive nations don't like diplomacy. But that's another debate to have. 😉

@SW-User I think they tried better diplomacy and less aggression in 1941, didn't work well.

@SW-User What your missing in the Defense Budget is the money they spend on education, which is huge.

@nudistsueaz What we'd tried up to 1941 was hiding our head in the sand. We tried not to be involved at all in global affairs; that didn't work once we were goaded.

@SW-User Your right in a way, but don't forget we were in peace talks with the Japanese when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, diplomacy.

@nudistsueaz That is true.
