Smoke from Canada wildfires has reached New Jersey

The haze and the smell are very prominent. I live about ten miles from the Statue of Liberty. Here's a photo someone took today (not mine)

Sorry 🇨🇦
chuck7882 · 61-69, M
@FoolishLuna not your fault. It's just amazing how far that smoke can travel
FoolishLuna · 56-60, F
@chuck7882 keep safe !!
My bestie in central PA has been talking about the haze from the smoke for several days.
@originnone that and the peanut Bar are popular here 3rd and spruce for the younger crowd
originnone · 61-69, M
@saragoodtimes We used to go to the peanut bar for their wings. They used like a butter and tobacco sauce.....
@originnone haven't been to either in years

Apparently our current low pressure area is acting like a funnel, sucking the smoke from the wildfires to the south.

The particles contained in the toxic smoke can enter your lungs and stay there. Masks can not filter out particles of this tiny size. A ring of these same particles strung together like beads could circle a human hair like a tiny pearl necklace.

They are asking people in the worst affected areas to stay inside. They are saying that people with asthma might be severely affected, and in New York, they are expecting a lot of hospitalizations of asthma patients.

I’m in Jersey too and they sent us home early because of the poor air quality.

I saw Yanni there years ago and I think Disturbed.

I can definitely see going to see Disturbed, but Yanni 😵‍💫

Torture
AbbeyRhode · F
Yep, we were choking on it last night. It's a bit better today.
originnone · 61-69, M
@AbbeyRhode Geez, I didn't take it that seriously at first.
AbbeyRhode · F
@originnone I wouldn't have thought it would be that bad, all the way from Canada. But I heard that the area burned is bigger than the state of New Jersey already. It's a really huge fire.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@AbbeyRhode you know just about every place I’ve wanted to visit but never have has been lit on fire and destroyed or shredded in a tornado or hurricane. I thought Gatlinburg area would be a great vacation destination and it burnt. I would have loved to visited Joplin and a strong tornado devastated it. And I’ve always liked the idea of going to Canada’s wilderness but now it’s burnt, a lot of it anyway.
tindrummer · M
usually it's out here west coast but sorry you're catching it 😥
Tonyjf50 · 31-35, M
It is bad on long island
Slade · 56-60, M
In LI we had ferocious rainstorms in the aft. Did they hit Jersey.

That'd clear up anything
chuck7882 · 61-69, M
@Slade we did not but the haze seems to have cleared this morning
Barny52 · 56-60, M
Didn’t know it was that bad
Barny52 · 56-60, M
@saragoodtimes only heard about it on here, nothing on our news in uk
@Barny52 the air quality is the worst it's been in history and not supposed to ease up until the weekend
Barny52 · 56-60, M
@saragoodtimes and it’s only start of summer what will it be like after a dry few months !
I’m in California and can relate in terms of the air quality problems with wildfires. Stay safe.
originnone · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard Yeah, but it never rains in California.
@originnone For awhile, that was sadly true. But this past winter and spring, we received several rainstorms.
sciguy18 · M
@bijouxbroussard Yeah, you guys get that stuff way too often.
AbbeyRhode · F
@cherokeepatti Were they ever close enough to worry about?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@AbbeyRhode yes they were a concern, happening so much in rural areas. One did come to the south edge of this city and it caught cars and an apartment building on fire after jumping a highway. One time I was driving home from work in SE OKC and driving down a road called Sooner Road. There were 7 smaller wildfires on the east side of the road in a rural area on a 2 mile stretch. Residents and volunteers were working to put them out. They thought someone was dragging a muffler on the road and caused those fires, it just took a spark to start a fire it was that hot & dry. And one large fire east of the city several miles that killed the lady I used to buy herbs & other plants from at the Flea market here. Someone drove up to her rural home & told her to get out, there was a wildfire headed that way. She told them she had to get her dog and they went on their way to flee & maybe warn others. She got burnt up before she could get the dog & leave. And others too, one came about a half-mile from where my brother-in-law lived…it burned up an area with a lot of large cedar trees.
AbbeyRhode · F
@cherokeepatti Wow, scary. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. 😞
this morning it's terrible in SE Pa.
sciguy18 · M
@saragoodtimes Yeah, I saw the Philadelphia news.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
There’s a helicopter spreading fire in a video
JustNik · 51-55, F
@cherokeepatti I can’t see the video but there is such a thing as a helitorch used to start a prescribed fire which can ultimately help. I don’t remember details but you can look that up.
sounds like I grew up not far from you. Madison
