I have my old one in case I need it for a back up. Grandkid uses an old one. But the one the grandkid has technically is not mine. I have 10 people living in my house between children and grandchildren.

The old iPhone SE was the smallest iPhone Apple had ever made and is now considered obsolete because it is no longer supported by Apple. You can still buy refurbished SE's online if you're still in need of a very small cellphone with data.
The new iPhone 16 is actually very close to the same physical size as the SE within a few millimeters and doesn't require a protective cover for it because the glass is non-scratchable and pretty much unbreakable.

@swirlie how disappointing, i thought it would be a bigger model, like my present iphone 14 pro.

Oh, but it is the same size as your 14 pro!
There are 5 different versions of iPhone 16, the smallest is the 16e, then the 16, then the 16 Plus, then the 16 Pro, then the 16 Pro Max.
It's actually the 16e (not the 16), that's the same size as the old SE.
The 16 Pro is the same size as the 14 Pro.
The difference in price is about $150 from one version to the next.
