My computer people - So my hard drive is going bad

I gave my computer to a small business repair guy and he told me that in order to replace my hard drive my computer isn’t built to have the hard drive removed and I would need to be disassembled and he told me that he can’t do it

My monitor is the kind that has the tower in the monitor built-in to the monitor

So I’m gonna be picking it up tomorrow is my computer done or should I take it to somebody else?

(I’m sorry I keep asking about my computer lmfao I’m clueless and need it for work)

The most important thing is, Back up your data NOW. Back it up before the hard drive has totally failed. What kind of computer is it, what brand model, etc? I work in IT and did break/fix for years. There are many computers that the hard drive is soldered onto the motherboard. Based on your description the iMac comes to mind, but of course, Apple is not the only manufacturer soldering on SSDs and Memory. You might be able to find someone able to do the repairs, but you also have to consider repair price vs a new computer. Really calling it soldered on is not the most accurate description. It's more "integrated" than soldered on. Before someone comes and talks about planned obsolescence, there are legitimate engineering benefits to integrating components into the motherboard.

@Thespis @DeluxedEdition *Edit* I see you've mentioned it's a Lenovo. That makes me think it's probably an IdeaCentre of some kind. The year would help narrow down the connection type, but to my knowledge, IdeaCentres have either used SATA, or PCIe HDD, or SSD depending on the year and model. Take it somewhere else, that's an easier disassembly and swap than most laptops. If you're going to have the storage replaced, get it upgraded too (SSD PCI if possible), and look into upgrading the RAM while you're at it. It wouldn't add much to the labor cost since they're already inside of it, and upgraded RAM would make it feel like a brand-new computer.

I did some research and found a detailed instructional video for your hard drive problem

Not believing this

I think maybe he's just not particularly skilled with dealing with AIOs and doesn't want to risk damaging it. I can't fault him for that. I would look for a different shop that maybe has experience with them.
Can you add a card in PCIE or any other way?
What kind of computer is it?

@UnderLockDown I’m really not sure what would that do it’s a Lenovo it’s the kind that has the tower built into the monitor. I just don’t know what model it is.😩
@DeluxedEdition Most motherboards have a way to add memory boards, and they have become fairly cheap. If you have an open slot, it would be simple to add an appropriate size memory card and clone your system to the new memory.

@DeluxedEdition Oh, is it an IdeaCentre?

Is your computer ike 2 in 1? Computer behind monitor screen? If that guy can't open it to replace hard drive then take it elsewhere
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@NeoNeo it’s a monitor that has the tower built into the monitor so it’s kind of bulky I’m airheaded I don’t know what exactly the model is I’m so sorry 😭😭

But I appreciate you so much for responding. I’m gonna take it to this place down the street tomorrow when I get it back.

@DeluxedEdition That's ok. Some technicians often hesitate opening case of such computers. I'm sure some experienced repair guy can open and get your hard drive replaced

This is a typical performance issue since components need to fit together in a sometimes difficult way. For example there are graphic cards which might perform up to date, but are too big to fit into the rest.

I for myself still struggle with even attempting to take my tower monitor to just any repair guy since it's too big and sorta too loose with its components. Do you really need a tower PC for work? And what's the actual issue with the hard drive?

How old is this computer?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@smileylovesgaming 7 years now I believe
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, FVIP
@DeluxedEdition I would definitely call around and see if anyone can fix it. See what it would cost and go from there.

Check for screws at the back and the bottom. If they're there, it can be taken apart.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
"isn't built to be replaced" lmao wow

Some bad designs have it on a side of the motherboard that you have to disassemble the whole computer, usually business models like Dell Vostro, but if a computer guy can't disassemble your computer you took it to the wrong person for sure

The pain in the ass ones usually take me around 30 minutes (some good designs take me 3 minutes)

Do you have the model number?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@th3r0n I’m thinking what you’re thinking I’m not saying the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing but I had a feeling that maybe I could take it to someone more qualified respectfully

Looking for the model now
th3r0n · 41-45, M
@DeluxedEdition a solo tech I can see how he might not have top level skills to do just anything but a business usually has at least one master technician that can do nearly anything, that's why I found that strange

@th3r0n I appreciate you so much for responding

My monitor is the kind that has the tower in the monitor built-in to the monitor

@wildbill83 It's an all-in-one, the motherboard is inside the monitor.

I"ve repaired those all in one PCs before. They are a pain in the ass but it can be done. The entire back of the "monitor" section has to be removed to get to the drive. Find a better repair guy.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@theoldschoola thank you this is kind of what I was getting at 🤣 I had a feeling I may just needed to take it to someone else

I appreciate you so much for responding
