Graphics card price?

I've been wanting to try to build my own gaming PC but all the graphics cards I see are crazy expensive. Is that normal?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Yes. It's a little better than it was but the huge trend of mining crypto currency means that there's a mass shortage on video cards since those are an essential part of the process.

Biggest recommendation is go for "good enough" rather than trying to go for the best card you can get because that's where the price skyrockets. The diminishing returns aren't worth the cost. I've always gone with mid level cards and it's not like games are less fun.

@CountScrofula I did look into some cheaper options but even they seemed over priced(from what I've been told). I was told to try for a 3060
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@LinaLina a 3060 is decent, especially if you're going to game at 1080p. I have a 3060 Ti and I can run most games on full detail in 1080p.
At the moment yes. I've seen prices double all the way up to five times their normal price. The first hit was crypto. Then the pandemic messed with supply chains and manufacturers on top of crypto. So the prices are ridiculous. And the same thing is now happening to storage with mining chia.
My advice would be to wait if you can. Also waiting will give you time to watch for deals that are short lived. But if you need one, shop around and find one that meets your current needs adequately. Now is not the time to splurge. Also some people are looking for used ones but that can be a big problem due to scalpers price gouging and cons trying to pawn off ones that are burned out from mining on unsuspecting buyers. And absolutely stay away from places like wish and sketchy knock off brands. As those can fry the rest of your computer.

Essentially a graphics card is a mini computer on its own. It has a GPU a special computer chip that can do graphic calculations very quickly (side note some supercomputers researchers use for huge calculations are just banks and banks of those GPUs tied together). It also will have a large chunk of memory. It'll need a heatsink too. So all that together will make it expensive.

cripto mining and the semi conductor shortage are driving up prices.
it will balance out over time and stores are still having sales, so keep an eye out and you will find something good for an ok price.
also explore getting used cards provided the seller is good.
No.

There are several problems...

1) CoViD has interrupted supply chains, and semiconductor chips have figured prominently in this madness.

2a) Allowing the domestic industry to be battered by chip dumping, then off-shoring...

2b) Costs of setting up new lines...

3) The death of places like Fry's, which used to be a place where you could walk in, grab a cart, and get all the parts you wanted to build your own computer. This is before they put in coffee shops, then started a slide which ended with them being a consignment shop...

So yeah, it sucks. Sorry.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
Low supply of semiconductors have shot up the value of GPU's.

Tbh if I were you I'd get a 2070 or a 1080ti.

It's enough for a while.

Double Lina! How are you?
Did you get a graphics card yet?

Sometimes the really hardcore hammers will upgrade ever so often and have one really good one just laying around. Maybe ½ price if Lucky
Try a peek through Facebook Marketplace or other places
Or post a "needed" ad
LinaLina · 22-25, F
@Valerian Not yet. Sold out everywhere.
LibertineWolf · 51-55, M
I used to build my own gaming PCs and used to buy cards that were last years for half price on eBay. Not the latest and greatest but under 600.00 each. I like running in SLI. You have to scour the net and you’ll find something reasonable
djjohnson · 41-45, M
depends on how good of a graphic card you want. But for the latest and greatest than yes that is normal. Just think about your cellphone. A $900 latest cellphone cost almost half of that once a newer one comes out.

I almost gave this a genuine answer and then I saw the time it was posted 🤦🏻‍♂️ I assume you got this resolved by now lol
LinaLina · 22-25, F
@SW-User I did lol
SW-User
@LinaLina glad to hear it! Hope you’re doing well :)
Valerian · 100+, M
What's up? 🤔 You've been online for a while today.
Or you're AFK? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Plans for Tomorrow? I'm Barbecuing for just myself it seems.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
There's a world wide shortage of chips and prices are through the roof right now.. Best to wait!
DMmeyourtits · 26-30, M
It's still bloody horrendous, it was supposed to get better but it's getting worse again... T__T
Irishgent · 41-45
They are expensive for sure - what did you go for in the end? 😃
LinaLina · 22-25, F
@Irishgent Still nothing
Convivial · 26-30, F
At the time they were being used to crypto mine coins...

@SW-User Didn't even know that's a thing.
Yes, very expensive.
Hey Lina. Wanna chat?
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
No that is not normal, but it has been like that the past year because of Covid.
I would wait if I were you.
LinaLina · 22-25, F
@FeetAreFantastic I've been waiting for almost a year now but probably will have to wait longer.
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
@LinaLina Yes I know, it is very annoying.

Work out what size card first then the PSU needed.

I have a Gigabyte 850W PSU Silver on my Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB = $999
SW-User
@LinaLina But what size ?

4 Gb or 6 Gb

For games or CAD work
LinaLina · 22-25, F
@SW-User Mostly games and maybe for some editing too. From what people told me and some light research I wanted to get at least a 3060 or better
SW-User
@LinaLina A 3060 is big $$$$$$
