Are there fire flies where you live?

Or do you call them lightning bugs?
SweetMae · 70-79, F
Lightning bugs! I love to watch them as they soar up into the air on a summer's night.
Peaches · F
I miss them.😟I'm from NC and was told they are starting to disappear?!
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@Peaches they prefer darker/less congested areas, street lights drive them off
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
we have synchronous lightning bugs here, can see them for miles in isolated places
Peaches · F
@wildbill83 That sounds awesome!✨Would LOVE to see that.😌
deadgerbil · 22-25
Yes. Took this pic earlier today

@deadgerbil Where is this ?
deadgerbil · 22-25
@bijouxbroussard my backyard. Chicago lol
@deadgerbil Wow, I didn’t realize they were anywhere but in the southern states. It’s so cool that you still have them.

Never here in California. Too dry. Have seen them when I lived in Iowa and Texas. Odd I don't recall seeing them in Virginia that was back in the 80's.

I called them by both names when I was growing up. But they are not present where I now live. I miss them.
Not where I live sadly, but when I go to the mountains I see them. Such fascinating creatures.
Piper · 61-69, F
Sadly, no I've not seen any since I've been back living Florida. When I was a child living here, they often lit up the early evening. I found them delightful...almost magical. I call them both, but usually fireflies.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Piper So they were in Florida years ago, but not anymore? Bummer!
Piper · 61-69, F
@DrWatson They are still in Florida in certain areas and times of year, I've heard. I'm guessing it's those places, where pesticides are not 'freely' used.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Piper Ah. Would you say that they have become a victim of the rise in retirements and tourism in Florida?
masaca · 61-69, M
Never seen one. Other than in the movies.

Peaches · F
@SW-User YES! 🤩
DrSunnyTheSkeptic · 26-30, M
Yeah we used to see a lot of those at night in the village in Bulgarian they're called lightbugs, in Turkish they're called fire fireflies as well, I used to be so fascinated by them as a kid
SW-User
Both. I love them. Little flying mini light bulbs. But not this year. I haven't seen any yet. Maybe 5G killed them
Never in California. When I used to visit relatives in Louisiana and Georgia we’d see them. But I’m told they’re much fewer now.
Peaches · F
@bijouxbroussard That's what I heard as well.
@Peaches I remember one of the most wonderful things was watching them from my grandmother’s front porch. When it was dark, you could hear crickets, and see all the fireflies. My cousin and I were talking about it this morning. She said she hasn’t seen one in years.
Peaches · F
@bijouxbroussard I have wonderful memories of the crickets and fireflies too.😌✨I miss all that...
JBird · F
Yes, locals call them minnaminni (no light, yes light 🤣).
ThaiGirl · 26-30, F
I never seen one
@ThaiGirl it is magical to see an entire field light up with twinkling lights

Used to be lots, none now for years.
A little bit of magic they are.
SW-User
I've called them Fireflies my whole life.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Yes. Tennessee was full of them when I was a kid.
SW-User
There’s glow worms 🐛 here 💡
@SW-User almost as cool, twice as creepy!
SW-User
Either. And yes, there are lots of them.
SW-User
Yes! So cool
Budwick · 70-79, M
We do call them lightning bugs.
They started showing up a few weeks ago.
We noticed them before dark.
They're lazy fliers and kind of distinctive look.
We have a nice display in the evening.
Not as many in years past.
@SW-User :(
SW-User
@SomebodyThatYouUsedToKnow We have glow worms though. Mostly in Waitomo from what I can gather.
