Do you believe zoos cruel and exploitative, or a way to educate the public about wildlife?

rckt148 · 61-69, M
I hate seeing a lion pace because he is bored out of his mind
or see people give Baboons cigarettes ,Elephants (especially little ones split up from their Moms ,
Its been proven they are very family oriented and taking little ones away from their Mom to soon make them aggressive ,
But if we do not protect some species ,they won't be around much longer .
I have worked with a lot of exotic animals and I have also seen the damage in the wild from an over populated herd .
Starvation and disease ,thats why states manage how many can be harvested and only in the part of the season where they are not nursing young ,the little ones can fend for themselves .

Because of zoo's .and finding ways to bread them in captivity we have brought many endangered spices back that were almost hunted out or had died out from the over population of humans who take their habitat to build their own homes .
So it has its pro's and cons
When in the wild people are allowed to shoot them just for the sake of having said they shot one ,,I would like to hunt them.
(not really my heart is not like theirs )
My Family recently went to the zoo and seeing the lion pace in the video did make me sad ,
But he was old ,I know in the wild ,a younger lion would have already killed him ,,thats the nature of things
Maybe he would prefer to be dead as in captivity ,but he was healthy ,well taken care of
He is still the king of the zoo

@rckt148 they are "over polulated" because we are encroaching on their space, we are the problems and only make things worse when we intervene.
@rckt148 Well said.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@NativeOregonian Well sad but true ,we are the problem
Population explosion has made building more and more homes take more and more of theirs ,
But statistics show the birth rate in humans is down .
But the only answer is population control and thats not worked out so well in countries like China ,but it is being adopted by other countries now .
Are you aware the largest cattle ranch in the USA is not in Texas ,but in Orlando Florida and is owned by the Mormons

The Mormon church is the largest landholder in Florida and runs Deseret Ranches, the largest cattle ranch in the U.S. While the church doesn’t disclose the ranch’s revenue, a 2001 estimate (PDF) places it at roughly $16 million.

With more people comes less land for wildlife
I am blessed to come from an area where they try to balance both
We don't have lions running around ,but the National Sea shore reserve is trying to save endangered species in the ocean and the wild life refuges that surround the area try to give sanctuary to wildlife you wont see anywhere else .
Actually my Grandpa and his Brother played a big part in that before they passed away ,,

My Daughters rescues abandoned cats (other animals too but its mainly cats )its a lot of money and work keeping up 40 cats ,and no one wants them ,they want kittens ,and my kids won't let anyone put them down ,,so my youngest has 40 added members to her family to feed ,but someone who said those animals were part of their family abandoned them in a home to let the fleas kill them or let them starve to death ,
But its a lot harder then most people know
Getting that many cats fixed ,all their shots and providing them shelter ,but they try to do their part
I am glad they are not lions that need to be fed a cow every few days ,then it might change their mind about putting them down .
The zoos breed a lot of endangered species and hold refuge to animals that would have died in nature or would have been euthanized. Zoos are amazing when it comes to education on animals/nature and can inspire people to care more about our planet 🤷‍♀️

I'll say this, I don't think nature conservation would be taken as seriously if it weren't for zoos. They're like a gateway drug for kids to witness the wonders of the world around us
luctoretemergo · 61-69, M
No...not if they're ran properly (and I'm sure some will argue that they're are none that are). If people support major ones as opposed to petting zoos or roadside attractions (malls!)..the research they do is invaluable. Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Funny how people get their nose out of whack over zoos but it's ok to "big game hunt"..ie pay someone to sneak up an a wild animal and blow it's brains out....sorry, just an opin.
Lackwittyname · 51-55, M
I waffle on this one, but I think it can be both, depends on many other factors.
Soramarie · 26-30, F
Breeding programs and education programs good registered zoos do are sooooo important! The horror PETA talks about is BS. Former Zoo keeper here, we love those animals most cannot be released or are part of ensuring the species survival!
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Soramarie Exactly
Effloresce · 26-30, F
Im all for animal refugees and rehabilitation centers, but not zoos because they’re usually not well kept and don’t have very large enclosures for the animals.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Effloresce The ones here in the states are exceptionally good, lots of open space and they are well fed.
Shayla · F
It depends on the zoo. The good ones provide enrichment for the animals on a regular basis, encourage conservationism, and research and promote breeding of multiple endangered species.
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
Any AZA-approved zoo is a good zoo. Zoos do much much much more good than bad. Anyone who is anti-zoos in general really should take some time to reconsider.
Northerner · 70-79, M
I think they are cruel, we can educate ourselves without looking at captive animals.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Soramarie Too cool :D
Soramarie · 26-30, F
It’s beautiful I also got to release an adolescent tiger and a wolf. Now I get to track them and see where they are
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Soramarie Awesome 🥰
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
I never took the education thing seriously, it's obviously entertainment. What zoos have done is keep many animals alive through breeding programs
SW-User
definitely both. i think keeping any undomesticated animal boxed up is cruel, but sometimes it's necessary
SW-User
Animals in captivity tend to be more docile when released back into the wild. It reduces their chances of faring with the competition. That being said, I am not a fan of this. As a biologist I’d much rather keep them in a reserve. Zoos are mostly for profit in the name of conservation.
Dale321 · M
If people make a profit doing good helpful things its great. The idea that profit is necessarily negative is absurd.

@SW-User
SW-User
Absolutely, but if it reduces an animals ability to compete in its natural environment, its best they continue to keep it in captivity.@Dale321
Lonelymanik · 31-35, M
Zoos are necessary but i would suggest a large acres of land for them to be free and protective.. it saves the animals from poachers and extinction.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
Educating the general public, zoos are not like circuses, they treat their animals way better and take awesome care of them.
SW-User
Both.
Some of the animals they brought where I live were endangered, so it's like a sanctuary for them.
Suezuu · 26-30, F
Both, but it teaches people wrong about them being happy in their enclosures
DownTheStreet · 51-55, M
I’m okay with them as long as they are large - some of old ones are really small
SW-User
Depends on the situation in which a specific animal came from
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Mostly the former. There's better ways to learn about wildlife.
imo21169 · 41-45, F
i thnk zoos try but they cant
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@imo21169 Watch the Bronx Zoo on Animal Planet on sunday nights, I think that show will change your mind.
Soramarie · 26-30, F
NO and people need to quit thinking this !
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
I believe the people who work in zoos are the key. There are some terribly kept zoo's in the world..that does not make zoo's inherently bad.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
Zonuss · 41-45, M
No. They display animals for others to see. They don't exploit them for money or personal gain. 🙂
Soramarie · 26-30, F
[@they also breed and release and rescue!!!!!
