When is it right to euthanized your pet

When they are terminally ill, or when they are suffering so much on a daily basis, because of age. There's nothing worse than watching an animal suffer, just because we want to keep them around. That is natural, yet why let the poor thing suffer? It is a hard thing to die. Hard as it is, it is a humane and loving thing to help an animal out, when they are suffering and struggling so bad for the next breath or hurting beyond all understanding.

When you know that you're keeping her alive for your sake and not hers. A good vet will tell you the truth about how comfortably they can live and for how long.

Your pet will tell you when she's ready to let go. Her eyes say it all.

When there are no other options medically and the financial burden becomes way too much. If the animal is in extreme pain why make it suffer anymore. I know this feeling all too well as I had an animal I had to put down because she was in extreme pain and no cure for it.

my cat had leukamia and no amount of operations and money could save him long term. It was sad though.

I think when they don’t have a good quality of life anymore due to age or illness.
When it no longer has quality of life and/or it's suffering.

I've had to put 2 dogs down. One was my little Schnauzer who had broken her neck and surgery was not recommended and she was in terrible pain that Demerol was not helping enough. The other one was my very old golden retriever who decided it was his time and stopped eating. Broke my heart both times but that's life.

When they are suffering. 😢

@littlepinklotus That's a good starting point, but I had a cat who appeared to be suffering badly, so took him to have him euthanized. My vet said, leave him with me for a couple of days, I'll see if I can stabilize him and fix the problem. I trusted her. She discovered he was a diabetic. He lived 12 more happy healthy years. He died, at 17, of old age.

Oh, and in case you think it's a money grab....she charged me nothing for the days he was in for testing and treatment. All I had to pay for was his insulin, and I got that from a regular pharmacy, not from her.

@Serenitree I should of elaborated I guess. Silly me. I completely understand. I would never put a pet down unless there was nothing else humanely possible that could be done for them. I'm glad your cat lived a happy life.

@littlepinklotus Me too! And I was quite sure you would investigate further if you thought your pet needed euthanasia, but it never would have occurred to me. If I hadn't had that beautiful person who cared more for the animal, than the money, to tell me he could live and be well, I'd have had him put down and thought I was doing the right thing.
