Fallenfromgrace If the use of her back legs never comes back, you'll find that dogs are very, very adaptable. She can live a perfectly happy and fulfilled life, just as she did before, but a little bit different. It'll be her new normal, and she won't even notice. For now, just care for her as best you can, and never hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian if you need answers. IVDD is rarely fatal except in extreme cases, so hopefully the surgery will help her, and she'll be just fine.
Once crate rest is over, it'll be time to start making your home safer. Doggy stairs or ramps for furniture will be a good idea, soft carpets (in case she drags her legs), and possibly rubber boots for traction on smooth surfaces to avoid slipping and re-injuring herself. If she's a little overweight, which most dogs are, reducing her food intake will be necessary. The extra weight will put unnecessary strain on her neck and spine, which is obviously not helpful.
And then you'll have physical therapy to start considering. Hydrotherapy is very helpful for dogs of all ages and conditions. I even do it for my orthopedically healthy dogs from time to time.
Overall tho, I think she's gonna be alright :) It's a very scary thing to go through, but it's possible to make a complete recovery from.
