Update: My kitten has passed away.

After my shift today, I spent hours with her. I noticed she would relax and lie down when I was close, but even in her weak state, whenever I tried to leave she would force herself to stand and follow me. So I stayed with her, talking to her, assuring her that I was proud of her, that she was doing great, and that someday we’d meet again. Within those moments, she would reply with small, weak meows that broke my heart.

Eventually, I was exhausted and went to sleep. Four hours later, I checked on her and found she had passed. I was devastated, and I can’t help but feel guilty that I wasn’t there for her very last breath.

I buried her beside her mother and brother, who also passed from this disease, and placed her toys with her. I just hope she’s at peace now, reunited with them where no pain can ever reach her.

Parvo is devastating for younger pets. I lost a puppy to parvo and had to sterlize the entire house. The next one got parvo in spite of everything and he barely made it too. Probably only survived because he was the biggest in his litter.

The puppy died quick. Lasted maybe only a week, if that. It progresses very quickly. The vet most likely wouldn't have made a difference. Sometimes pets are just marked for death and there's not much we can do about it.

I lost a dog to an aggressive tumor last year that she was fighting for many years. Despite the surgeries and the medications, it kept coming back more aggressively. I could've taken her to do chemotherapy and maybe buy her a few more months, but I had to accept the reality that I couldn't afford to spend at least $10 grand just to prolong her suffering. She was marked for death and I had to accept that.

That kitten most likely wouldn't have survived no matter what you did. Parvo just sucks. It hits so hard and so fast that most pets are done for before we can properly treat it.

I know you feel guilty because I've been there too, but I seriously doubt there's much you could have done.

@TinyViolins First sorry for your losses, hopefully you’re healing. And yeah, I guess you’re right, parvo is really just brutal and fast. I’ve been beating myself up thinking I could’ve done more, but hearing your story makes me realize sometimes it’s just out of our control. Thanks for sharing, it helps a lot.

Your cats weren't vaccinated?

@oogirl Yeah, I actually didn't know this existed before.
