Mine was spayed before I adopted her. One of my friends’ cats was newly adopted and "intact". He would pester the other cat, who was neutered, the Chihuahua, who would run from him, and their Husky, the only female pet, who would smack him.
And at night he’d sit by the window and howl.
I would sometimes watch their children, the daughter was 13, sons were 9 and 5.
One night the youngest boy wondered aloud why the cat was so loud and disruptive.
His sister replied, "He’s in heat."
"What does that mean ?" the child asked.
I cut in, lightly, "He wants to go on a date, but can’t."
The older boy quipped, "Like you, Sis ?"
I jumped in between them and offered to make snacks.
