One of my cats has kidney disease.

He was diagnosed on Tuesday. It keeps hitting me over and over throughout the day. We have only had him almost 8 years. We brought him in from the street in 2016 before a hurricane, and I thought we would have him longer than this. I thought I could get him to at least age 16 or 18. But that will not be the case. We are devastated. And yes, he is a senior cat, but that doesn’t make it hurt less.

He has a big personality, and I am going to miss him terribly. Being told that his levels are not coming down after a week of fluids every day, was disappointing, and I wanted to break down right there. The majority of his kidney functions have stopped working. All of this happened so fast. Now, all we can do is try to get the levels down from home with subcutaneous fluids, and try to keep him comfortable until the time comes. I am heartbroken.

My daughter has a 19 yr old cat with the same thing. She is giving the IV's and the cat is on special food. He also had a kidney infection which sprung up. He was supposed to die. After that was under control, his levels came down slowly. He's lived 3 yrs like this. Still eating, drinking, and loving. Hang in there. A miracle is possible.

@PoisonLace Every day at home. My daughter gives the to him. He tolerates it well.

@Livingwell I honestly wish we could afford it. The thing is, my boyfriend makes good money, but isn't willing to spend thousands on an animal. He will tolerate doing this every other day, but having to go back to the vet once a week would be asking too much of him. He doesn't like being away from work for very long, as he is expected to get things done because he's an engineer. I do not drive, so it's him that brings me there. If the bags didn't cost money, maybe, but since they do, he would turn his nose up at the idea. And after 6 days of IV fluids at the vet in January, they told us he was still dehydrated. It's just not fair. If I had the power to do what your daughter has done, I would definitely do it. And it's not that I've given up, it's that I can't convince, nor is it my place to ask him to spend his money...because right now, I'm out of a job. :(

@PoisonLace I'm sorry. I'm not sure how much they cost but the clinic is working with her.
Aww, I feel for you tremendously. My cat, lived for only two years, his heart was so loving and affectionate, giving.... and we all know a few throw ups from a cat you should expect, but when I saw him losing weight, suffering I had no choice to place this to anything else, I took him to the vet, I remember crying when I learned he had kidney disease, I remember feeling judgment from the vet as often they assume you let them be exposed to something that would harm them. She in turn, after seeing my emotions, gave us the food to help him at "cost", send us home with fluids to inject into him (my partner's mom did as she was an RNA, registered nurse) and we gave him a home and love until the moment he could not live anymore. I remember my girlfriend calling me at a new work place, I had already said yes to overtime, I couldn't just leave and the moment I got home, as he was my cat, he was my love, he was my friend, he died in my arms as soon as I could be with him.

Love them. They'll never forget, they may even hold onto their love long enough to give you their love.

@thewindupbirdchronicles I am so sorry. I felt this post. They really do remember, and we don't deserve them. They are wonderful creatures that deserve the best. It breaks my heart that they have to suffer like this, and I hope to do the right thing when he needs me to. Hopefully he will wait for me too. 😢
i'm a cat dad myself and reading your post has put a tear in my eye. i am so sorry you're going through this. i had a cat that lived to 18. i hope my little one now (she's 2) lasts as long. i feel your pain as i will be heart broken if she goes early...

i am truly sorry you are going through this.

@beermeplease Please check out Jackson Galaxy on YouTube. He is a known cat behaviorist. His videos have been helping me understand more, and also the importance of feeding cats the right diet...such as wet food, as it is apparently better than dry, and will also keep them hydrated. He will also talk about which canned food not to feed them due to specific ingredients...but of course, he does not name the brands because of liability. This will be a step in the right direction to help your young kitty live a long, healthy life. It has been a long road for me, learning how to properly care for my pets. Unfortunately, we cannot save them all, but we can learn from our mistakes, and we can learn from them. I am definitely learning from my sick kitty, even though he is dying. It is breaking my heart, but I will take what I have from this experience and apply my knowledge to my other cat, and any future pets.
@PoisonLace thank you so much for thinking about me and telling me this. i will definitely check it out. you're a sweet heart...thank you 🫂

@beermeplease You're very welcome. I do anything I can from afar to help people. And Jackson Galaxy is an amazing source.

I think anyone who has had pets is going to understand what you're going through. It's the hardest part about it. But...
We brought him in from the street in 2016 before a hurricane...
And I bet he paid you back every day. And you paid him back for what he brought to your lives. You saved his life. Either from the hurricane or a probably short life on the streets.
Lucky cat. Lucky cat parents.
Good luck.

@Ynotisay You are right. He has loved us ever since. I just wish we had more time with him, as he was already about 6 or 7 by the time he found us. We have had him close to 8 years now, but 8 years is not enough time...I have felt robbed of time with him, even though we met late. Of course, it would have been sad to have never met him, and he would have had a rougher life. I'm so glad we have had him for the short time we have. He is very special.
Ynotisay · M
@PoisonLace Thanks for that. Not sure if there's a better way of dealing with loss than to be grateful for the life. 👍
My cat was ordered to two types of homeopathic drops. I can´t recall the name now but I can look them up if you want. They worked very well.
I decreased his solid food and starting offering water and diet snacks (popsicles) that he loves but are served in a bowl of water. The amount of urine has improved ande he is fine now

@Underconstruction Kidney disease? What stage?
Torn60 · M
This made me cry. I wish there was some way to make him feel better. I pray that his day are filled with happiness and love.
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@Torn60 He gets whatever he wants, with the exception of food he isn't supposed to have, and going outside into the open. He can, however, go out into our pool enclosure. But when I say he gets anything, I mean it. He gets all the cuddles, pets, and even water from my cup if he wants it. He is king until the time comes. I am spoiling him every chance I get.
my baby cat had cancer. she was only 3 years old. it hurt so bad to lose her. she reminded me of charlie chaplin. she'd make me laugh. whenever i printed anything she would run to get it and bite her teeth into it like a staple. and i would roll up my receipts into balls and she would literally fetch them like a dog!
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@AliceinWonderland I love having cats who fetch! She sounds like she was an amazing friend. They are the best. I'm so sorry she passed of cancer. They truly do break our hearts when it's time. It's tough to handle, sometimes more than losing a human. :( They touch our souls.
So sorry to read about this 💔
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@BizSuitStacy It's been hard coming to terms.
Morrowind · 26-30, M
I feel your pain. I had a dachshund that was only 9 when she died. Had a ton of issues over time including cancer. Tried even put her through surgery only to die a month later. Was devastating I wailed at the vet because I didn’t make it in time before she passed away
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@Morrowind I'm so sorry. I can kind of relate with my own dog. He doesn't have cancer, but he's got a ton of issues. Despite that, he keeps moving...and when the time comes, it's going to break me. I hope you have found peace with yourself regarding not making it in time. She knew you tried your best, and she felt your sadness. You were doing right by her, and know that she understood. They know, even though they can't tell us.
Animals on the street have less life expectancy, even if supported afterwards. It isn't your fault, you gave him everything.
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@Husher I know...it just sucks. Because he has been such a wonderful, loving, and charming kitty. 😭
Beth35 · 36-40, F
I'm very sorry our cat died of cancer and we had to put him down. In the end he was just a heap of misery
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@Beth35 So sad. I hate that they experience that kind of pain at all. It's such a cruel fate. I'm so sorry. 😭
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Unfortunately, it is all to common in cats.
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@MasterLee I know. And I just found this out. If I had known, he would have been SDMA tested a long time ago. SDMA is a rare test that finds kidney disease earlier than the regular blood work. I'm going to find a way to get my other cat tested, so he doesn't risk suffering the same fate. I'm not playing with my cats' health anymore.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@PoisonLace I have lost several for this
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Damn it. Why do cats have to die?
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@LordShadowfire It really isn't fair. 😭 He's such a good kitty, too.
