Are dogs in your neighborhood aggressive ?

I always hear stories about dog attacks. It never happened where I am, they’re all friendly with responsible owners
Notanymore · 36-40, M
The UPS man dare not venture around my house....nor the mailman, trash truck, scoolbus or random scooters
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
@Notanymore I'd walk right up to him, half expecting a "rottie rumble"
cute dog showing me his ball...

I grew up around big dogs and my personal bulldog, I'm more scared of chihuahuas than any "big scary" dogs
@RoxClymer And rightly so. Little dogs were bred for killing rodents, and it shows.

@Notanymore what an absolute cutie

Yes. I sometimes encounter dogs that charge at me and don't listen to their owners in the woods.
Blanchy · 31-35, F
@CrazyMusicLover I have always had dogs myself (I like them but also for safety reasons), but this has been a huge problem for me too, because other people's off-leash freaking dogs would charge at mine, and many times I had to break up fights. My dog was big, so was their dogs often, and I'm just a small woman. It's ridiculous. Many times the owner wouldn't even help, and some even had the audacity to get pissed when I kicked their dog to get it off mine. I only let mine off-leash in specific fenced-in areas for this sole purpose, where I could also trust the other dogs. Now I have a dog with epilepsy and I'm terrified of another dog attacking him and triggering a really bad seizure.

@Blanchy Omg, be careful, I heard about nasty attacks when an owner tried to separate fighting dogs. One woman in my residential area has died because she caught infection and sepsis in this kind of situation. I guess it doesn't happen often but still, dog bites can be dangerous for this reason.
Blanchy · 31-35, F
@CrazyMusicLover I try to be careful, I don't put my hands near their faces. I have vaccinations against rabies and this other thing which I forgot what's called in English, just in case. I mainly had this problem when I lived in Denmark, in Ukraine most people have control over their dogs. Here we have strays, but those actually respect humans, so you can just yell at them to go away. Still, it always worry me, so I wish laws around off-leash dogs – and dogs that can get out of their colors – would be more strict. It's not even as much fear as it's just hating the thought of possibly getting into an uncomfortable situation like that anytime I go out. /=

All the dogs seem pretty cool in my neighborhood. But they already know me or are used to seeing me. Not many people in the neighborhood. And every house seems to have a dog or 2. Half of them come to my house almost daily. They know where the good treats are.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I live in a pretty remote and redneck area so there's a few dogs around here I don't trust, to put it mildly. My dogs are sweethearts.
Sunrises · 26-30, F
@CountScrofula i dont trust hunters with dogs. Or farm dogs.

I live in the city so most dogs know how to act
SarahAndSamantha · 46-50, F
my neighborhood dogs are all absolute sweeties. Except for Fluffles, he's just stuck up
Sunrises · 26-30, F
@SarahAndSamantha some dogs are introverted and dont want to be pet, u gotta respect that lol
exexec · 61-69, C
No. We have strict leash laws, and you almost never see a dog running loose. There are some dogs that might be aggressive if not controlled by their masters. They are usually kept away from friendly dogs like mine.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
I've heard of them happening, but not often. People are really good about keeping them on a leash. Not to mention cleaning up after them.
TheFragile · 46-50, M
I don't see a whole lot of dogs in my hood.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
No but I have heard from people who have.
Bowenw · 61-69, M
No but some bark incessantly
Sunrises · 26-30, F
@Bowenw could drive one crazy
Luckily most pet owners here are very responsible.

Not usually.
All the dogs in Sherwood are fun and friendly.
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
I got bit once in my old neighborhood the dog was small
@Hanginginthere The stompers are the worst ones.
In the past I only knew one aggressive dog, about 33 years ago, a Great Dane that kept getting out. One day shortly after my Grandfather died from cancer, a friend of the family, who was a Vietnam Vet, was charged by it, he pulled out his concealed .45 semiauto pistol and shot it dead. Today he would have been arrested on the spot, but the Portland metro area in the early 90's was still pretty much conservative and the dead dog's owner was charged for letting a dangerous breed live in an unsecured dwelling.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@NativePortlander1970 Well, this might be my controversial opinion but I think this is exactly how aggressive dogs should be treated and there shouldn't be repercussions for it if the dog is notorious for such behaviour. At that point it's a wild animal and people have the right to defend themselves just the same as they would against a bear or a cougar.
