I so get this one.
Last Saturday we took our cat for a follow up. She has had health issues and now an unspecified swelling.
Long story short the vet (who loves animals as much as we do) delivered the bad news and we took her home for a couple of days.
When I got the news I ugly cried in the vets office. And ugly cried once as we put her down - the only saving grace is knowing that cats mask pain and there is no telling how much she was hiding from us.
I was a little better the next day but little reminders made me sad and my ears are a bit watery as I type this.
I don't type this to make you sad. Just to share that losing a friend/family member is traumatic - and it doesn't matter how many legs they have.
Don't hide your sadness. Acknowledge it - let it out.
And when you visit the resting place - honor Idris with some pleasant memories. And know that you gave your friend a better life than they would have had anyway.
RIP Idris (and Nutmeg)

@Pretzel So sorry for you loss of a dear friend. It is so hard.
I was a mess when I put my Dogger down, even though I knew it was the best thing to do.
I don't know how I will deal when I have to put Roger down. He has been my everything and I don't even want to think of life without him. But i am loving him as much as I can while I have the ability.
Animals create special deep parts in the heart.

@FoxyQueen I'm sorry for your loss as well.
My daughter still lives with me and has emotional issues - she got a new rescue kitten a day or two later. She's cute but I told her straight out that I had no intention of getting attached to this one and would not be involved with it's care and feeding - but wouldn't treat it badly - she won't need to be afraid of me.
We'll see how long that lasts.
