No good deed goes unpunished
@Ferric67 Was that "un" a blooper?
I cannot imagine any good deed being punished - unless it was intended to do good but inadvertently caused some kind of harm in the mind of another.
There's a difference between good intentions and actually good.
Genuinely good deeds have beneficial effects and reliably generate good feelings, which are in themselves their own reward.

@Ferric67 Ah, I see.
Some people can't be helped. For instance, addicts. Helping them just acts like a band-aid and keeps the addiction going for longer. Addicts have to be allowed to reach their own rock bottom before they can begin to turn their lives around.
Many people have pride and feel ashamed if someone else is trying to rescue them. Wounded pride or ego can cause people to lash out in anger.
I made three rules for myself. Only help if it's something a person can't do on their own, or if it makes the task much easier.
And always ask if they want help and if so what kind.
Don't help if it will cause me severe disadvantage or pain.
If someone has a strong need to help, joining a volunteer organisation can be a great way to get involved.
