@helenS When I was at school I saw boys in tears after a couple of mild whacks with a slipper and girls taking a severe caning with hardly a murmur. A person's sex isn't a reliable indicator of how they will react to pain.

@Sharon I would think that girls are much more able to suffer and endure pain because our bodies are more adapted to it. We are the ones who give birth, that’s why.

Well it meant anyone who behaved wrongly was made an example of in front of everyone! It made me feel I was glad it wasn't me up there bending over.

@Lynda70: I think you put forward very strong arguments for equal treatment, in particular, I noted your comment that you and your husband are equal parents to your children. That was the case with my parents who shared both the giving of affection and the administration of discipline. I was embarrassed at being spanked, but no more so at being spanked by a female than by a male- the greater concern was the severity of the spanking.

@jackcros: The severity of the spanking was my only concern, the sex of the person doing it didn't affect that.

If only one parent administers discipline, that parent can easily become "the ogre", the evil one in the eyes of the child.

In any case, judging people simply by their sex (or race) is both wrong and dangerous. It allows wrongdoers who happen to be the "right" sex to go undetected while defaming good people who happen to be the "wrong" sex.

Would a child really have been at less risk from Myra Hindley than from Mahatma Gandhi? That's what ladybird's posts imply.

@nevergiveup When I was growing up, boys and girls were spanked together regardless of age. It's very unfair to treat members of one sex less favourably than members of the other.

@Lynda70 When they was young i would drop there pants with the hole family in the room. When the girls got to 12 onwards they was becoming young women and the boys seeing there private parts i felt it was not the right thing
