This was part of the fanciful narrative of Southern plantation owners somehow posting job opportunities in Africa (only there, not locally in the US, or Europe, or even Asia), that deals were struck, black Future Farmhands of America were given nice accomodations on the trip across the Atlantic, were met by a wagon from their new employer to bring them to their lovely new housing and take their luggage--and they were immediately given some previously-agreed-upon gold as their premium for doing all this, which they accepted in their nice clothing--
