How I would end the Gaza and Ukraine wars

These two wars are the ones getting the most attention worldwide. Efforts to end them or even broker cease-fires have, so far, failed. However, the art of negotiating a settlement (which happens to be one component of my job) often requires both sides to accept something repugnant to them. Compromise can sometimes be nothing more than eliciting the feeling that the other guy is suffering just as much as you are. With that in mind, I'm proposing the following.

Ukraine

We all remember Putin's boast that he would be in Kyiv within a week. Not only did he fail to achieve that, he hasn't been able to crush the Ukrainian resistance. Ukraine for its part hasn't been able to expel the Russian troops. The war appears to be a stalemate, albeit one with tremendous loss of life.

I propose that Russia keeps Crimea and the parts of eastern Ukraine it currently occupies. The people there are mostly Russian speaking and virtually Russian already. In return, Ukraine joins NATO immediately. Russia is already bordered by six NATO countries - Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Norway. One more won't make a difference. The theory that Russia invaded Ukraine to prevent it from joining NATO has only come from Russia's apologists in the West ("how would the US react if China wanted to place missiles in northern Mexico?"). The argument on the other side ("How would the US react if Mexico wanted to take back the Southwest?") is at least plausible because Russia does, in fact, occupy eastern Ukraine. So Ukraine loses that area in exchange for NATO's guarantee that Russia won't be able to take anything else from them.

Gaza

The stated reasons for Israel continuing the war is to root out Hamas and get the remaining hostages back. Negotiations up to now have failed because, despite the Arab League's concurrence, Israel insists that Hamas must leave, and they don't want to. The conspiracy theory reason is that Netanyahu wants to prolong the war as it gives him a reason for staying in office and avoiding prosecution for financial crimes. This may not be entirely out of line as many Israelis believe this. So I'm proposing to grant him a complete pardon in exchange for his resignation. He can retire with no fear of prosecution. And since Hamas doesn't want to leave, fine, they can stay there on condition that they release the hostages. However, that would also mean that only food, medicine, and other essentials would be allowed in - no building materials as long as Hamas is in charge. They can rule over the world's largest tent city. Any Gazans who wished to leave would, of course, be allowed to.

I realize that neither of these are long-term solutions, although my Ukraine proposal may end up being just that. It does nothing to curb Russian expansionism in other places, just as my Gaza solution doesn't result in a Palestinian state. But if implemented, these would at least have the immediate effect of ending hostilities. The alternative, outside of absurd proposals like NATO invading (the people suggesting this seem to be unaware that NATO is a purely defensive organization) would be for the status quo to continue indefinitely. No one will agree to give up something for nothing. If that's what you want, all you're doing is prolonging the conflict while gambling that your position will improve in the future.

We may disagree on some of the detail, but nothing you say here is unreasonable or objectionable. Negotiation and compromise are essential to securing a deal. Also focusing on the situation at hand and not being distracted by what happened in the past or what might happen in the future. A skilful statesman should be capable of negotiating a mutually acceptable deal and selling what may be a difficult message to their people. Unfortunately skilful statesmen (and dealmakers) are in short supply right now.

I would also add that Trump is now too compromised to lead successful negotiations in either country.

I like your creative proposals indeed destroying the land you are fighting for to desolation is absurd. I’ve put forth potential options toward mutual peace already twice but what do you think? Of
1. Time share with rotating timeslots paired with a nearby oil platform habitation structure off the coast that has storage for both communities under guard and surveillance
Or 2. Every time a bomb goes off everyone sends their kids to the opposition’s schools
Etc.
Normally, you’re a smart man, but what you’re saying here makes absolutely no sense. First off, you’re peddling lies. Putin never claimed he’d be in Kyiv within a week.

Your proposal that Russia would allow Ukraine to join NATO? Impossible. That’s one of the main reasons for the war in the first place. From the very beginning Russia laid out its conditions:

1) Denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine.

2) Neutral status. Ukraine must pledge no NATO membership.

3) Protection of Russian speaking populations in Donbass.

Russia does not want NATO on its doorstep, any more than the U.S. would tolerate Russia or China placing military bases in Mexico.
@SomeMichGuy Thanks, but Pic's solution is to get rid of Ukraine and Israel.

@LeopoldBloom You just can't go a day without slandering and lying about people. The only one supporting genocide here is you.

The Russia-Ukraine thing would work if Russia would agree to it.
The Israel-Hamas thing might be the worst idea ever. Not because it would be only a temporary solution but because it would actively make things way, way worse for everyone involved. The Palestinian people would become more poor and unemployed than they already are, and as a result, probably a lot more militant and antisemitic. The Israeli government, for its part, would learn that there are no consequences to corruption and democratic backsliding, and so would probably be doomed to a lifetime of fascism.

Any Gazans who wished to leave would, of course, be allowed to.

To where though? The countries around them don't want Gazans because it presents a risk of terrorism, and most of these countries aren't in a position to take in refugees.

The problem with all conflicts is that neither side wants to compromise. This happens in daily life with people too fighting over all matters.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@wrule I feel like Ukraine would take a compromise, but Russia's idea of "compromise" is surrender.

War suits Russia; Ukraine; Israel; Lebanon and to some degree, even the U.S.

It enables all of them to remain in power, despite questionable motives and continue to influence factions in their respective countries just in case the wind of opinion changes locally enabling all of them to gain footholds in foreign climbs and so ensure their military spending is justifiable to their economic backers.

As to the rights and wrongs of it, that 'truth' got lost long ago.

Finally what if to settle disputes the leader of each side have to duel either by pistol or sword? Possibility of future sport might fix this too indeed the North American tribes would settle disputes by playing lacrosse winner gets hunting rights and/or territory access
Putin started the war in Ukraine because he didn't want Ukraine to join NATO. I highly doubt he would be OK now to accept it, so that tosses out that idea.

Israel are tired of this back and forth with hostages every few years and are OK to murder everyone to make it stop permanently. Since they have the US backing them, the murders will continue until they have what they want.
They claim to be after Hamas, but then they kill women and children, starve the entire country. This is not a religious group attacking, these are murderous savages. There is no religion in Israel that would allow such atrocities. The world thinks this is a Jewish war, but no, it is just murder, killing for a small piece of land and a future of peace without Palestinians in it.
The world can do nothing except watch. It will end once all the Palestinians are gone, eliminated, ejected or dead.
Obviously the Jewish god does not exist, never did.

Could NATO simply become allies with both sides? Then these neighbors would be forced to get along
@jehova That is actually how you know the claim NATO is about peace and cooperation is BS. Russia tried to join Twice.
Sure. Ukraine can just pretend it has leverage, and we can all pretend Israel tells the truth!
Using a pretend reality doesn't lead to real peace.
As usual you manage to be objectively wrong on both issues.

And a loyal propaganda soldier for the American empire.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow We know your solution is to obliterate Ukraine and Israel.

@LeopoldBloom No, support for actual genocide is your position.

What flavor boot polish is Bibi wearing today?
