Are we close to WW3?

What is the likelihood of a world war occuring in the near future? Will it happen soon or in many years to come?

Or, will it happen at all?

My parents both served in the navy. In the military there is a general, but rarely expressed in public, consensus that WW3 began with 9/11 and is ongoing.
