Have you noticed how keen some countries are to commemorate wars with other countries but are reluctant to talk about civil war?

I'm thinking especially about Spain and Ireland. At least in the former it was a clash of ideologies to some extent, but I've never understood the Irish one. As soon as they got rid of the common enemy they turned on each other. My reading of it is that the victorious side more or less adopted the policies of the defeated with the support of the Catholic Church.

War is the greatest obscenity humanity has created.
Commemorate the brave undoubtedly, but the people who seek to glorify war are encouraging a next generation of young boys and girls to get slaughtered.

@helensusanswift I couldn't agree more with that statement.

If you know how horrible both civil wars were you understand why they prefer not to talk about it.

@auris I know how horrible all war is. I suppose there's more guilt about civil war and descendants have to live with people whose ancestors may have been killed by ancestors of theirs. I think there are cases documented in Ireland where men killed their actual brothers. I feel that all war that could possibly have been avoided should be lamented.
The Irish Civil War gets a lot of coverage in Ireland

@Ozymandiaz I do live in Ireland and not as much as I'd expect. Plenty of commemorating driving the British out but not that much about the other. Admittedly I live in the UK bit but we do get RTE.
@alan20 The Irish Civil War was only a very minor but bloody chapter in Irish history that everyone regrets. 99% of the current population has moved on so there is nothing really to talk about. Achieving independence is of much greater significance.
ever notice those salvating for war never pick up a gun and take their own sons to the front line?.

In the US, the Republicans honor the Confederacy.
