Has Anyone Else Noticed This Recently?

The price of eggs has doubled in price where I live. And the size of LARGE eggs has gone down as well. They are about the same size as MEDIUM eggs were before.

I just took delivery of 2 dozen from Walmart on Sunday. And yes, the price has doubled and the eggs were so small they rattled when I shook the "large" container. I was prompted to check USDA grade standards for eggs.

One source of smaller eggs is younger chickens. From somewhere in my memory are "pullet" eggs that were popular because they were laid by very young chickens, and are supposedly higher in protein.

@MarineBob Banties are a small type of chicken. The roosters are tiny but tough. Pullets are young females just starting to lay eggs.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@cherokeepatti My dad was a small town grocer ... I remember like in the earlier 50s when pullets were popular. Maybe it was a local thing when eggs came from local farmers.

@cherokeepatti @MarineBob This reminds me .... how my awareness and awe of chickens and chicken farmers is attributed to the Ohio State Fair.in Columbus, OH. I wasn't much of a Fair person until living in Columbus for a few years when I was in the Air Force. Public enthusiasm for the fair made it an irresistible look see, and it was one of those WOW events. Until then I thought of chickens as just chickens and was unaware of the variety, and the variety of pigs, and of every other food we put in our mouths. A good portion of the Fair was Ohio farmers showing off and competing for ribbons. Until then, I thought of fairs as just places for people who enjoyed going in circles. Like two or three loops around a ferris wheel and "OK, can we go home now?" To keep us from leaving even at sunset their night entertainment included Louis Armstrong, Arthur Godfrey.

I haven't been to Columbus in years, is the state fair there still one of the greatest shows in America?

Nearly 56% of all the grocery business in the US is held by just seven mega firms. This has made predatory price gouging easy to do.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@DrWatson these corporations get tax write-offs for throwing perfectly good food away instead of donating it. Sometimes it’s not even expired either. Watching way too many You Tube videos of this. Some stores seem to be emptying their shelves into long pull-out dumpsters and then doing it again within the same week.

@4meAndyou I will need to eat a lot more protein after I come home from the hospital in order to heal up. Was planning on eating quite a few eggs since they are easy to cook & good for a soft diet. I have a couple jars of egg white protein powder I can use in smoothies and baked items to help increase the protein.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@NativePortlander1970 thank you. I know it’s not going to be easy to heal up from multiple surgeries, one day at a time I guess.
@cherokeepatti (((((HUGS))))) You're so very welcome Dear Friend 😊🤗❤

@cherokeepatti I have some freeze dried egg powder in my cabinet, also. I keep it on hand for the times when I run out of eggs unexpectedly.
a While ago we had an outbreak of avian flu and the prices of eggs went up and some poultry farms aound here closed their doors. We had very limited stock. Supermarkets sell small eggs and label them as extra large without blushing. It's an every day thing and it grinds my gears.

@ammelee There is a truck driver named Eli Yoder who posts videos on You Tube. He said when they go to make a haul they aren’t told what is inside the trailer. If they are full of cases of eggs and left unsecured inside of the trailer and they slip and fall over during transport and break the entire contents of the trailer is discarded. Makes me want to scream with that type of waste. He said that is just one reason why eggs are overpriced now. No telling how often it happens. And I heard someone when I was working at Walmart say if they get a big case of eggs and any of them are broken they throw the entire case of eggs away, they won’t pick out the individual cartons that are good and stock them. They just write it off as a tax write-off instead of doing that or donating them to a pantry or charity meal place.
@cherokeepatti I hate waste
I'll still use a cracked egg if the inner "skin" is still in tact
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@ammelee Same. One time my uncle was working as a receiving clerk for a local grocery store. The man who delivered the eggs for the store had a case that had gotten dropped and some of the eggs were broken. It made a bit of a mess for the rest of the cartons of eggs that weren’t broken. He told my uncle he could have the eggs if he wanted to take them. He brought them home and we carefully separated the unbroken ones and the lightly cracked ones. The broken ones were put together and scrambled for the dogs to eat.

Is that why the step daughter keeps coming over for eggs? Hell i thought they just liked duck eggs better.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MarineBob duck eggs are very expensive in Asian grocery markets and that was way over a year ago. I can’t imagine how much they would sell for now.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@cherokeepatti 2 dozen is $5.00
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MarineBob That’s cheap compared to what I saw the last time I looked.

Don't get me started with the Vegetables.

I bought cabbage.....

The price is 1.49 a pound from The tags.

Ring it up to almost 5 bucks......

Imagine broccoli would cost 🤦🏼
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
It's almost time for another accident/fire at a chicken/egg factory. Then they can drive ppl away from this great protein source completely.
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
Eggs cost us $3.87 yesterday at Aldi near where I live in Michigan. I guess it's because of the golden yoke that they cost so much (I wish).
Fieldmaster · 46-50, M
Yes, and yes, it is crazy price. Gouging and artificial inflation? It's all there. The food portion has shrunk in every way.
Blondily · F
I noticed my brand went from 3 something to 7 bucks!!! I was shocked so bought the store brand instead.
XDHyperGirlXD1 · 31-35, F
The grovmeants around the world are saving money for there new fancy cars and houses

So they need YOU to pay for that

So they have a new deal going on

Its called the less for more deal how it work is you pay more and they give less

That way you keep coming back to buy more instead of buying one big tray/bag off something and saving on it 😁
@XDHyperGirlXD1 AKA, the economics of shrinkflation.
Egg prices are all over the map where I live.
MoodysGoose · 51-55, M
@Tumbleweed you talkin about my large eggs? I dont charge xtra 😂
4meAndyou · F
They are still staying around $4.59 a dozen if you buy 36 at Walmart.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Update: it's bird flu. There is an egg shortage.
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
I didn’t see any eggs at all at my grocery store this morning
