Vietnam veterans were treated...negatively on their return to say the least.

When did the tide of public opinion change?

Because they're obviously seen in a far more sympathetic and honoured light today than in 1968.

We weren't the good guys in Vietnam. But we've been much worse since.

I served from 1970 to 1962 on Iceland, not Viet Nam. Recently i get thanked a lot for serving.
The U.S. was seen (by many) to be interfering in another country’s civil war. Especially considering all the social problems we were having here (this was during the Civil Rights struggle) we needed to be cleaning our own house first.

But it was very unfair to take out the country’s frustrations on those serving in Vietnam when they returned, and they did eventually receive a formal apology.

Yes, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution acknowledging the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans and offering a long-overdue apology for their treatment upon returning home. This resolution recognized their courage and sacrifice during the war.

Veterans in general are thought of in a much more positive light today. When people find out I spent almost ten years in the Navy they "thank" me. It's weird.

They, at that time, were the face of a failing, atrocious, and drawn out war. One televised nightly on the six o'clock news.
They were accessible.
Over time, thinking people came to understand they were just only boys, sent to fight for nothing. Nothing at all.

The Vietnam war was the most evil and insane project ever undertaken by the U.S. government.

I believe anything associated with that war was considered anathema..with time came the realization that they were victims of two administrations blunders ..time brings perspective
